Reflection:

These artifacts show my growing understanding of how children develop in different areas such as physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth. Through my observation assignments, I learned how to document behaviours carefully and interpret them using developmental theories. These pieces fit this section because they demonstrate my ability to recognize strengths, needs, interests, and patterns in children’s behaviour. They are my best work because I used both theory and real observations, and I reflected on why children acted the way they did. These artifacts show that I can observe objectively, identify developmental milestones, and respond to children with respect and understanding. They also reflect my belief that each child develops at their own pace and deserves a supportive environment that honours their individuality.

Through the Loose Parts invitation and activity plans, I learned how to design environments that support exploration, creativity, and problem-solving. I chose these artifacts for this section because they clearly show how I connect children’s interests with meaningful learning opportunities. They are my best work because I carefully considered open-ended materials, learning goals, and how to scaffold children’s learning during play. These artifacts show my skills in observation, planning, and adapting activities to meet different developmental needs. They also reflect my belief that children learn best when they have the freedom to explore materials in flexible, engaging ways.

Reflection:

These artifacts demonstrate how I build responsive and respectful relationships with children, families, and colleagues. Through the cultural diversity reflection, I explored how culture shapes expectations and behaviour, and why educators must respond with sensitivity. The communication letter shows my ability to connect with families in a warm and professional way. I chose these artifacts for this section because they show how I support inclusion and create a sense of belonging. They represent my best work because I reflected deeply on my own biases and learned how to honour various cultural backgrounds in the classroom. These artifacts show my skills in communication, empathy, relationship-building, and creating inclusive environments where all children and families feel valued.

It highlights the importance of using objective observation to support teaching, assessment, and planning for young children. I included this artifact in this section because it reflects my growing ability to use observation and documentation to support children’s learning and development.

Welcome to my professional portfolio. This portfolio represents the knowledge, skills, and experiences I have gained throughout my journey as an Early Childhood Education student at Fanshawe College.

I chose Early Childhood Education because I enjoy working with children and supporting their learning and development. I believe that every child is competent, capable, curious, and full of potential. Throughout the program, I have learned that an educator’s role is not only to teach, but also to observe, listen, build responsive relationships, and create a safe and inclusive environment where every child feels a sense of belonging.

During my first placement in a toddler room, I learned how to respond to young children’s needs, support their daily routines, and plan age-appropriate play-based learning experiences. I provided activities such as snow painting, a paper flower craft, straw snowflakes, and a yarn sensory collage. These experiences helped me understand how open-ended materials can encourage sensory exploration, creativity, fine motor development, and language skills.

During my preschool placement at Wortley YMCA, I became more confident in observing children, documenting their learning, and planning activities based on their interests and developmental needs. I facilitated experiences such as colour matching, Bubble Adventure, and Straw and Playdough Building. Through these activities, I learned how to support children’s problem-solving, communication, self-regulation, physical development, and cooperation. Feedback from my mentor also helped me understand the importance of remaining calm, learning from unexpected situations, and providing children with encouragement rather than focusing only on the final result.

Studying ECE as an international student has also been an important part of my personal and professional growth. Although communicating in English has sometimes been challenging, my placements have helped me become more confident in communicating with children, families, mentors, and other educators. I have developed patience, creativity, observation skills, and a willingness to reflect on my practice and continue learning.

This portfolio brings together my course assignments, placement experiences, certifications, and reflections. Together, these artifacts demonstrate my growth as an emerging early childhood educator. As I continue my professional journey, I hope to create inclusive, caring, and child-centred learning environments while continuing to strengthen my knowledge and professional practice.
