The English canon is comprised of many great books but most of them include characters, themes, stories that students cannot relate to. Including texts that consider culture, religion, gender, socioeconmic status is so important. Read "The Round House" by Louise Erdrich in lieu of "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "I am not your perfect Mexican Daughter" in lieu of "The Catcher in the Rye". Including newer texts can be good for inclusion and teaching about diverse perspectives as well. We want students to relate and see themselves in their education, otherwise they may think "why should I do this?" or "Why does this matter?"

Including cultures into a lesson is very important, for example Health Science encompasses nutrition. I can include different cultural foods, students can choose a dish that is apart of their culture and they can make changes in order to best fit their nutritional needs based off our prior lessons (vitamins, and minerals, balanced diet, and food groups).

If the textbook focuses on a lemonade stand in a suburban area, but your school/students are in an urban area, it is not a culturally relevant question. Editing this question to be more inclusive and mindful of the students' funds of knowledge may bring in the students and help them better see the abstract concepts you are trying to communicate
