I like this comic image because it does a great job of showing the importance of why UDL is important for our students. Like the animals, our students are all different, and learn differently. When thinking about creating an assessment, we need to ask ourselves will this assessment be appropriate for ALL students? Most likely the answer will be, "no." That's why we need to think of multiple assessment to meet the needs of all our students.

I like this picture because I have seen an image similar to this in college describing equality and equity. It taught me that fair isn't always equal.
However, I like how the far right image shows accessibility with the fence being see through. It represents that students are all different, but when using UDL all students have the tools to be successful in whatever assignment, project, assessment etc. within the classroom.

The way students have learned hasn't changed much if you really think about it over the last 100-200 years. Students sit at desk, and teachers stand up and lecture. However, if you use the UDL approach you are changing the environment and getting away from lecturing! Do more hands on, group work and engaging to make learning more and students more excited to learn.

This video does a great job breaking down why UDL should be used in the classroom. It speaks on the benefits it brings to ALL our students. It talks about the three principles. It talks about what it would look like incorporating UDL, between choices for students, materials, scaffolding, supporting rather than lecturing and flexible assessment choices. It speaks about the importance of collaborating with other teachers and administrators so as a teacher you are properly supported. It talks about what lesson planning for UDL assignments would look like, and what the classroom will look like as well. The classroom will be filled with students working on different things, but ultimately all achieving their goals while engaged and excited about their learning.

In this video we get to learn about the importance of UDL in the real world. The speaker talks about the importance of UDL in his real life, giving one example of being deaf, and the importance it plays in his life. The speaker talks about how he applies it to his job working for amazon's homepage, and making sure it's accessible to all customers. He then talks about doorknobs, and how they aren't always accessible to all customers. People who don't have hands, mothers pushing strollers, and how the automatic doors was a great example of UDL so that ALL people could access and use these types of doors. He also spoke about Google glass, and how he came up with the idea of going to a movie theatre and having captions for any movie they were watching. This made it accessible to not only him, but people with language barriers, or quite simply anyone could use and benefit from this idea. This is also using UDL, because everyone can benefits from it. This video gives many examples of why we need to use UDL in our classroom, because we use it in the real world, all the time.

UDL Pyramid

When using UDL it's also important to think about these three things listed in the pyramid above. Teachers should ask themselves is this assignment accessible for everyone in my class? If the answer is no, think about other ways students could access information for example, maybe some need videos to fully understand and learn the concept. Next, ask yourself is this assignment usable meaning is it interactive, can each student use the tools or materials equally? If the answer is no maybe scaffolding is needed. Some students may need manipulatives, while others just need a book and pencil. The last thing to think about when using UDL is inclusion. Are we as teachers being proactive in our lessons so all students with different strengths are being included?

I really enjoyed this video because the speaker does a great job of explaining the difference between barriers and disabilities. She explained that barriers are things that prevent progress, and how it's important to break these barriers when teaching students, and using UDL. She explained that UDL should be used so that no student should have to explain their disability but rather the way of learning in the classroom will be accessible to them, and have options that don't single anyone out. She talked about how she used UDL in her classroom with open book testing. She explained that it helped them with less stress, but also it helped them learn how to study, and that it ultimately created a positive learning experience created life long learners in her classroom.
