Morrison gets out of the car, and Cassie says “Mr. Morrison circled the front of the truck ... he lifted the truck in one fluid powerful motion ...”( Taylor 225). This is when Mr. Morrison moved a full truck off the road so they could drive by. Mama was then scared that the white men were going to hang him.

“cause I’m leaving it up to you to tell her” (Taylor 87). This shows that Mr.Morrison handles situations well. This also shows he is supportive.

A quality that makes him a hero is his selflessness. Mr. Morrison, Papa, and Stacey are coming home from Vicksburg and they come across night men who show up in a truck, intending to hurt them. Papa gets shot and, “After them men shot Papa, they came down tryin to get Mr. Morrison, but he was too fast and strong for them” (Taylor 215). Mr. Morrison was a hero because he went after the men attacked them. When Mildred D. Taylor says “too fast and strong,” she meant that Mr. Morrison and his selfless character, immediately went after the men before they could come and get him. He helped Papa and Stacey in this case because he took a risk and went after the men so Papa and Stacey would not get more injured than they already were.

For instance, when Stacey gave T.J. his coat because T.J. said it looked like Stacey was a fat preacher, Uncle Hammer did not make T.J. give Stacey the coat because he wanted Stacey to learn a lesson. “Seems to me if Stacey’s not smart enough to hold on to a coat, he don’t deserve it. As far as i’m concerned, T.J. can just keep that coat permanently.”(Taylor) This shows that Uncle Hammer is a teacher to the children because he was teaching Stacey to not let people manipulate him to give them stuff

In the process of Stacey, who was there to witness it all, explaining how the Wallaces attack was layed out, he mentions, “I did see Mr. Morrison pick one of them up… and fling him down in the ground” (Taylor 215). Mr. Morrison was protecting David Logan and Stacey Logan while being attacked by the Wallaces. The Logans were going to strawberry to get food for the townspeople. When on their way back the Wallaces attacked. While defending them he smashed one of the Wallaces into the ground. He is a hero because he is physically protecting the Logans despite the threat of a gun. His selflessness truly shows through his actions.

In the 1930s time period whites were prejudice to black people, and they did not take their opinions in to consideration. The Wallace’s are rude people “ the wallaces did that, children. They poured kerosene over Mr. Berry and his nephews and lit them on fire. One of the nephews died, the other one is just like Mr. Berry”(taylor 98). The wallaces are terrible people. They poured kerosene and lit them on fire, causing them to have burns and scars for the rest of their lives

He say y’all touch one hair on that boys head while he on this land, he’s gonna hold every man here responsible” (Taylor 235). This may make it seem that he is nice and caring about T.J. but in reality he is allowing the child to die in cold blood as long as he is not killed on his land. In the next response to why he is horrific it shows he is not only a petty thief but is justified as a criminal.

This makes him a hero because this is showing how powerful Mr. Morrison can be. Also he is now a hero using his strength to move the car. To get the kids home and safe with everyone else. Mr. Morrison does many other ...heroic things in his time during the book, like cracking bones to save life’s.
