For example, my Wells Fargo account on my phone uses facial recognition rather than a saved password. The drawbacks are the fact that Apple mines data from facial recognition and my personal identity can be compromised. The fact that some faces can't be recognized, especially darker faces and women is an ethical problem, but it can be hard to solve. To design an algorithm that works for every face in the world will take time, and the fact that IBM won't use facial recognition shows that some companies are working to fix this problem. On the problem of my data and image being compromised, I honestly have just accepted the fact that big tech companies and the government already have data on me and facial recognition doesn't change that. Not sure that's what the question is asking , but it's true. I think that the idea that most people in tech sincerely want to good isn't necessarily true. The big companies like Facebook farm our data, which then affects what we see on social media and the type of advertisements we see. I believe that some big tech companies don't have the users benefit at the center of their interests, but I do believe that tech is not neutral. Like I just said, based on the data that companies collect, social media is shaped to show what we want to see, which also means that for a white person like myself, we might only get the perspective of one social group. Tech and science companies often pander to the people they know are the majority, which is often white people. This means that tech and science play a huge role in creating injustice, because not all end users are considered while new products are created.
