One day, in orchestra, I was given an assignment to watch a video teaching me about different instruments. I had to answer the question: which instrument in the video did you like the most? After learning about the different instruments, and being reminded of my love for the ukulele, I chose that instrument to put as my answer to the question. I had always loved the ukulele, but never had any sort of push to get one and start playing, until I got that assignment. I believe the ukulele is such a beautiful instrument because it is one of the few that can harmonize with itself and it’s chords are very soft and lovely. I have always been into slower, beautiful music rather than upbeat pop, which most kids my age listen to these days. I was so excited to be able to create the type of music that I love so dearly. During this pandemic, we have had a lot of time to try new things so I think it was a great time to start! I love to sing, but tend to be scared and nervous when it comes to singing in front of people. The ukulele allows me to partially cover up my voice and feel more comfortable with singing in public. It can prepare me for a time when I’ll be able to sing alone with confidence!

From the very beginning, after being told that we had to be quarantined in our homes, away from the amazing world and people we know and love, I knew there was one thing I would very strongly miss: my ability to not care about what I have. From this quarantine experience, I saw who truly wanted to talk to me and who cared for me, and at this point I’ve realized, I don’t really have any friends. Of course a part of me always knew this, but I didn’t let it truly get to me because I was surrounded by people no matter what they thought of me. I miss going to school and talking to the people no matter how close we were or what relationship we had. I’ve been lonely and have had all the time in the world to worry about the horrible things that quarantining has provided for me. I’ve been given too much time to rot away in my thoughts. Thankfully with all this, I still know who I can always rely on to be there for me, and no matter what gets in my way, she will stay close. Thank you so much Romy. Note: this photo was taken before the pandemic

This can be both good and bad because the more symptoms, the worse it can be for the people that have it who may be given more problems to deal with. It can be good because now people that don’t think they have the virus and instead think they have another illness, can know that they have this virus and can get tested for it.

Is there anything else you want to add about your thoughts of the pandemic?

I was very concerned because, as a physician, I knew how dangerous and devastating a pandemic could be to the country and the entire world.

I am grateful that we are safe and healthy and have the basic things we need to survive.

It is historic. We have never dealt with anything like this before in modern times, creating a great deal of uncertainty. We will learn a great deal from the experience both things we did right and mistakes that were made.

The reason for the slight change is because something like this has probably happened before at times when they were totally unable to deal with it with medicine and science that was available at that time. The whole world was different at the time of previous pandemics.

At the beginning of this quarantine, I believe everyone was excited to take a step back and find a way around the hard work that they were presented with frequently during the school year. Now, I can’t speak for everyone else, but it’s become much more of a struggle to get my work done, no matter if the work has become easier for me. When you’re surrounded by many things that you’d rather do, you can easily fall into them and further push off the work that you were required to do for the day. For me, with ADHD, it’s even more difficult because I already have trouble focusing in the first place. For the last few months, the pills that should’ve been helping me in school, were actually doing nothing for me. Now, at the time I need to get a different prescription the most, I am not able to get one. That would require me to personally meet with a doctor, and sadly that is not possible at this time. Although I wish I could push through, the work load has become much larger, making things even more difficult for me, but I am trying my best and I hope in the end it’ll be good enough.

I took a walk in the woods at dusk tonight, and I saw an owl sitting on a tree branch. I love listening to owls, and often hear them from my windows at night, but it’s so rare to see them up close! It was such a precious reminder of the natural world around us.

What were your first reactions to hearing about Covid?
I thought....it’s in China, which is so far away. It’s scary and terrible that so many people are sick and dying, but it was hard at that point to envision it impacting us in our own neighborhoods, to friends and family. Then that all changed... and so quickly.

Do you examples of racism or inequality? As I walk through the streets of my neighborhood, I see delivery men and women delivering packages, groceries, take out, etc. Those men and women, I observe, are almost always people of color. The recipients of the deliveries are almost all white. I have heard some say... some of us are lucky/fortunate to be able to shelter-in-place. They are right. Not everyone has that option. they have to put food on their tables. Also, seeing this inequality makes me wonder... for those who are only having others deliver food, etc. to them, are they just placing that risk of infection on others less fortunate?
