There is a photograph with him wearing a birthday hat sitting by a piece of cake, under some balloons and streamers. The caption says "Melvin: Age 6". People usually have a birthday party with cake and balloons and decorations. Often, they also have their pictures taken with their cakes.  In this photo, Melvin looks the same age as he does on the inside front cover of the book.  So I think he is still 6 years old.
He plays baseball. I can infer that because there is a picture of him smiling while holding a baseball bat in a field. His dad says he is a great athlete. From my prior knowledge, I know that when people are good at a sport, they usually also like it. 
He plays soccer. I can see a soccer ball on the lawn in the photograph with his dog. I think maybe they are playing soccer when the picture is taken. 
I think that is his dog because it looks happy to be in Melvin's arms. She finds his other sneaker on top of the lamp, his toothbrush in his sock drawer, his socks on the dog, and a slice of pizza stuck to his homework on the wall. He also plays basketball and tennis. I also think he likes to make things like monsters.  He sleeps with a teddy bear and maybe an octopus.  He saves his money in a piggy bank. I can tell because I see all these things in his room.
