At the beginning there are not canals and just horses to carry goods over vast land masses and he would ask the wagoners if it was easier to use boats to get heavy materials over distance. The wagoners said it would destroy many jobs like ours. The duke of bridgewater however liked this idea and when he was in france and holland he could see it worked well so he got people to get working. The boats were dragged by horses along the bank. The starting purpose was to transport the coal from the mines to the city. Two boats were used; one big boat was used strait out of the mine then was transferred via a crane to a long narrow boat to be taken to the cities where the people that can afford it purchase it. The next challenge they had to overcome is going uphill they did this by using water gates that operators could restrict and increase flow between gates to increase the water level making the boats go up. Sometimes canal builders would not use locks altogether instead they built "inclined planes" which was a mechanical arrangement by which the boats were pulled from the lower level to the upper level of the canal by a chain worked by water-power or steam. Underground streams where also used to get past the mountains. Digging out the underground canals was a very dangerous job that no one wanted to do. It explains the types of work available, the machines, living conditions and hardships of the working family. He was a wheel Smith.... Or something..... Anyway he fixed wagons. Then when he heard the Duke of Bridgewater needed people to build a canal (carpenters and stone masons etc) he decided to help out. Some work in a weaving mill, some as cobblers and some just work at home. They don’t earn much and have a hard time living and paying for food and rent, but have a much better life than what I thought it would be as they weren’t beaten senseless, had their own home, could leave the mill during breaks, had work breaks and had food that wasn’t gruel on the table.

Despite this book being for children it has no story or life in it. It seems, by the books that people at this time read, as there is no enjoyment in life, everyone went to work came back home slept and got up again in an endless cycle. It seems as if they lived for the sole purpose of existing.
