An Overview of Constructivism and how it can be applied in ASL

Constructivism can be applied in many different ways in ASL, it just took me a while to see it! I really like the idea of students learning from each other and helping each other along in their studies. It puts them in charge of their learning but also teaches them responsibility. With constructivism they have choices on how they want to complete their learning in the class as well. It is also a nice way to encourage creativity and self-motivation. As I have outlined in these next posts- you will see how myself and others have applied constructivism in ASL and interpreting courses.

I would want my students to put themselves in the shoes of the deaf people of that time period. What would you do if your native language was banned when it came to your education? How would you feel if yo were told you couldn't marry [so and so]. What could have been done to make this a better situation? What would deaf education look like if Oralism didn't exist?
