         <description><![CDATA[<div>Science and Technology teachers at my scool don't have much time or training but they have a high degree of motivation to engage the students' interest, give them the tools they need for success and bring career awareness in their activities, with the help of former students, parents, universities and centers of research. They also have the support of the Head of School for the management and coordination of career activities across the school, the tutors, who helps the students in their overall academic and personal development, and the career counselor, who would meet the student and the student's family on request to analyze their skills and inclinations.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think the biggest challenges are fundings and time. It would be very useful to take pupils to science fairs, interactive museums, guided tours in manufacturing plants, hospital lab or inviting scientists with different backgrounds&nbsp; to talk about their careers, but it requires money and we cannot expect pupils to pay for all these activities. There should be programs investing in young people development. These government programs should be based on the real needs of society and industry.<br>Also the teacher can be a good guide but he/she needs time to prepare him/herself in the role of counsellor. I think from my little experience that the problem in Italy is that there is limited o not at all collaboration with a counsellor or a counselling agency. We should accept the limit of the teacher who cannot become a counsellor without a proper training and work towards an increased collaboration with people trained in this job.<br><br></div>]]></description>

We work to expand opportunities for students to link their&nbsp; knowledge to career options. The Career Counseling Office encourages students to meet with our career counselor (I am the counselor !) in one-on-one appointments to discuss about their career . We offer for students career meetings, discussions with experts , visits to university, internships in IT firms...&nbsp; Evaluating personal preferences, skills, personality and interests is an important part of the process.&nbsp;<br>The&nbsp; challenge at the national level is to ensure the existence of a career counselor in each school (unfortunately, not all schools have a counselor!) and the need for greater openness of science teachers to collaborate with the counselor and link their  knowledge with practice.</div>]]></description>

A lack of time to knowing what is going on in the professional world, and a lack of time to teach your students about the little you know during classes.<br><br>As there has been a shift for more professionalism in teaching, direct contact between teachers and reseachers has diminished. As a teacher you can't just take part in a conference or visit a research centre because you have teaching obligations and now most conferences take place during workdays.<br>On the other hand, you teach several subjects and in each you have to cover many topics. All these makes it hard to devise carefully planned interventions which guide students towards a scientific career.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I've&nbsp; been a teacher of foreign languages for 23 years but I can name the main problem of loosing interest to science in our pupils as this is also the reason of low grades in all the subjects. It's very complicated and loaded with too much information curriculum. Very often pupils loose interest to learning and loving science subjects and thinking of them as connected with their future profession after they have problems trying to learn this mass of formulae and difficult words. They just stop studying. As a result, too much theory not liked with the real life don't let the teachers think of STEM and show the pupils possible career prospects.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I can say that this paper sums up very well the main challenges in helping students to choose a career pathway in STEM. First of all, and naturally, the inevitable uncertainty about "tomorrow’s jobs" in a hyper speed-changing world… But also the absolute lack of organized information on STEM, provided to teachers/counselors; the lack of opportunities to research, digest and organize the existant information, simultaneously with teaching/counseling daily routines;  the overwhelming distance between pure theoretical school counseling and the meaningful experience in real life contexts, that unfortunately don’t exist…<br>All these are severe obstacles to a proper, enlightening, motivating, future building help.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Although my school has good labs, we don't have a lot of time to try other things because of the extent of the curriculum. Also, science teachers don't know the new careers available and can't give counselling because we lack the knowledge. The information about STEM careers all over the world should be organized and available online. Neverthless, here in Portugal, in the different schools where I've worked, we do go with the secondary students to different universities on their open day to the community. There is a lot of different activities available and counsel to the students that helps them choose a STEM career.<br><br></div>]]></description>

There is little use of scientific instruments and dedicated environments (scientific and informatics laboratories) that are present in the school, to a low level of knowledge by some teachers in the STEM careers world. Surely a major problem is the scarcity of school resources to go to places that could trigger students in the ambition of a STEM career. Another problem is the low attendance of STEM disciplines, which are often in the minority when decisions are made, for example, on the goal of a trip. Often, they prefer "tourist" destinations to scientific-technological destinations such as the "City of Science".</div>]]></description>

Either because of resources and time or the famous "Ivory tower". Another problem that I see, coming from a research background myself, is that sometimes even the STEM professionals, specially in academy are also ignorant about the different pathways a STEM preparation can take. So as I see it is a double problem, teachers wanting to contact with this professionals that do not have all the panorama of the richness of STEM careers.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;Even though the significance of early introduction to STEM subjects is<br>being discussed recently by many researchers, serious initiative for national regulations, curriculum<br>development, teacher preparation, and setting standards is still lacking for Turkey. Considering the demands of the new information era, ensuring every child to receive a qualified STEM<br>education starting from early childhood would be a logical investment for a country which intend to enhance<br>its capability of sustainable development. As mentioned before, there is a large amount of research point out<br>the significance of enhancing practices of STEM education starting with the early childhood. Unfortunately the<br>studies regarding to the STEM education in Turkey do not signify the key role of early childhood institutions in<br>terms of enhancing children’s scientific thinking skills and their attitudes towards scientific disciplines.<br>Children are inherently curious and eager to learn. Education should be designed to promote these innate<br>motivations of children. Keeping them exploring and ensuring their prospective success should be the prior aim<br>of the full array of early childhood stakeholders. Educators, policy makers, initiators, businesses should<br>cooperate to create a smooth continuum of STEM education for early childhood field, in order to raise citizens<br>who are capable of critical and analytical thinking and using their knowledge to solve daily life problems to be<br>able to compete with other countries in the 21th century. That can be ensured by integrating these fields with<br>each other, constructing connections with children’s daily life, utilizing age appropriate approaches, supporting<br>pre‐service and in‐service training of teachers in STEM areas, building quality network among academicians,<br>teachers, policy makers, companies, and community.<br>In order to achieve the goal of being capable of competing with developed countries both economically and<br>culturally, children should be raised with an approach to nurture the skills that are necessary for creativity,<br>problem solving and critical thinking. Since STEM education has the potential to enhance these skills, teachers,<br>educators, scientists, engineers, government, and entrepreneurs should work in collaboration and support<br>early introduction of STEM disciplines with an appropriate approach. Steps that should be taken may include:<br>&nbsp;STEM education for early childhood in Turkey should be coordinated with the developed countries such as<br>United States and United Kingdom. Partnerships and projects should be established with these countries. Early<br>childhood teachers should receive quality education to enhance their content knowledge on STEM subjects.<br>Early childhood education departments in universities should offer courses related to STEM fields both for<br>undergraduate and graduate level. Also, in service trainings should be provided in regular basis to enhance<br>content knowledge of teachers about STEM disciplines and promote teaching practices of STEM disciplines in<br>an integrated manner with a developmentally appropriate approach. Universities, schools, government,<br>businesses, and community should work in collaboration to enhance STEM learning of early childhood children.<br>Pilot STEM schools can be established for investigating the opportunities, and elucidate the phenomena. By<br>that way a research based STEM curricula can be developed which use learning trajectories that build upon<br>children’s needs, abilities, and knowledge. For providing informal learning experiences science museums or<br>science centers should be established in every city by government or by private companies. By that way STEM<br>education should be given all children regardless of their gender or socioeconomic status.<br>Achieving these goals will require a serious commitment, coordination, and effort, but it will yield tremendous<br>outcomes such as raising citizens capable of 21th century skills.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

Guidance activities consist in many cases only in informing the world of professions, without providing a grid of interpretation and integration of this knowledge with oneself.<br>3. a conceptual problem - the orientation was conceived as a special activity, which must be carried out in parallel with the educational process and by specialized personnel.<br>4. A school counselor is assigned to more than 1,000 students and that is why time for career guidance for a student is not enough to make the most appropriate decision.<br>It is well known that career counselors are often not well informed about careers in science and are therefore not well equipped to advise students on these issues.<br>This is also true for my school.<br><br></div>]]></description>
