Chapter 1: Values

There are many value in the utopia that Jonas lives in. One value is obedience. In The Giver by Lois Lowry obedience is very important. Everyone follows the rules and never disobeys them. This keeps them safe and out of harm. In our world when people disobey the law other people are put in jeopardy. Another value is kindness. In this utopia kindness is extremely important because it steers away from problems causing the perfect world. Additionally, There is respect that also has to do with kindness so problems are avoided. In addition there is compassion. Compassion is when everyone helps each other and avoid issues and drama. Finally, responsibility. Being responsible shows that in the perfect world everyone can get along and take care of themselves. Everyone has to be responsible for themselves and make sure they obey the rules.

Chapter 3: Apple

The apple in The Giver could symbolize many things. One example is that the sweet moments of life is combined with the bitter core. This represents the utopia Jonas lives is because when you release someone you are releasing the bitter core or the pestling seeds. Also, it could symbolize sameness. The different varieties of of apples represent differences but in the utopia they are all the same. However the apple also symbolizes growth. The seeds in the middle grow the next apple. This shows that Jonas is growing up and becoming a mature adult and him turning 12. He has to learn new ways. Jonas is a seed helping to grow the community and making the generation of 12's count. All seeds need to grow to become a good apple to eat. Jonas needs to become a mature child to show his responsibility and prove what he is worth.

Chapter 5: Forbidden

In Jonas's utopia there are things that are forbidden to make the utopia perfect. Somethings that are forbidden are that when you tell a dream you have to tell the whole dream in order to find out somethings. In addition, to get treatments to stop weird things from happening during puberty such as stirrings they must report it in order to receive a treatment. It is forbidden to take the treatment of pills without reporting the stirrings. It is forbidden to grow and have puberty so they take the pills to stop it. This all leads to the main thing that is forbidden of pointing out differences. So the pills prevent growth so we can't find differences in height or other things. It prevents pointing out differences in who takes it when. Not only does it prevent the forbidden rule of pointing out differences but the rule of love. It is forbidden to love someone so they take the pills to prevent them from falling in love.

Failed Utopia Question 1

Lois Lowry combined some aspects of failed utopias into Jonas Utopia. One of the aspects was strict rules. This is because they have certain rules everyone must follow such as everyone must report stirrings before they take pills. These strict rule ideas might have come from the Fruitlands Utopia. She also included that they adopted children and wouldn't have biological children. This idea was from The Shakers Utopia. These aspects either help or fail the utopia but so far Jonas utopia has survived.

The utopia Jonas lives in could survive. Based on the failed utopias they have strived on strict rules. Rules keep places in order and help maintain a good society. The failed utopias failed because they didn't work together and separate people based on race. However since Jonas utopia works together with everything and doesn't see difference they can survive. They will be able to survive because everything and everyone works in harmony with each other leaving a good path for others to follow.

The Receiver's House

The Receiver's House is different from others in the community because he has double locked doors. The door to the building is locked and the door to his office is locked. This ensures he has privacy because his job is very important. He also has nice furniture. The fabrics on the chairs and sofas were thicker, the table legs were skinny and curved with carved decorations at the foot. The bed had and embroidered cloth draped over it with very intricate designs. In the community everything that The Receiver has is more luxurious than those of the community. Jonas explained how in his house everything had a basic design. The reason for these differences is that The Receiver has a great honor in the community and he needs comfortable things for him to focus and do his job.

Transmitting Memories

The actual process for transmitting memories is the old Receiver places his hands on the trainee's back and the memory goes through the mind. The new Receiver thinks about the memory and learns what it is. When the memory is passed on the old Receiver doesn't have that memory anymore. The first memory Jonas receives is the memory of snow. He feels the cold touch and the cold air. As well as the sled and he sees the runners.

The means that Jonas didn't know there were others before him or that the landscape and the community was different before his time. He only thought that what it is today in his community was how it always was. This is not a good way to live. People need to learn about their past and now differences to see what went wrong to fix it in the future. If people don't know their past they can never learn from their mistakes and create a better society.

Jonas is surprised when the Giver turns off the speaker and locks the door because no one in the community has that power. It is all for privacy so that through the speaker they can't hear what he is talking about and the locked doors make sure no one can go in while he is working. The normal citizens in this world don't get privacy everything they do is announced to the public and everyone can guess it is them. Normal citizens don't have enough honor or power to have the ability to not share something or be private with their family.

He has never seen snow, his own breath because he was so cold, sled, or runners. For sunshine he has never seen the sun or felt the warmth it gave. For sunburn he has never experienced the stinging pain of the bright red skin from sunburn.

This title is symbolic or significant because Jonas was just selected for the most important job and the old Receiver now The Giver is giving all of his knowledge to Jonas of the world way before his time. This is significant because Jonas can now give information from generations beyond. He gives information to learn about his past.
