At the beginning of the story, Gerald is dishonest, a womanizer who had a relationship with Eva behind Shelia's back. During the story he was caught as one of the perpetrators of Eva's death. He has a change of heart in the middle of the story and decides to be honest about his relationship with Eva Smith.

"Yes. I suppose it was inevitable.

Gerald is a dynamic character who had an affair with Eva and lied about it in the past to Shelia. Due to the Inspector, he changes and tells the truth about his relationship with Eva Smith. When he discovers that the Inspector was not an actual inspector, he decides to change back to his old ways and disregard the lessons he had learned.

He is selfish, only caring about something if it directly affects him. We can see he has a conscience, since he nearly changes in Act 2 and would have had he not found out the truth. He is also a bit prosperous, since he owns a company and can afford to give money to Eva.

Priestly had added this character to maybe show the people believing in capitalism, only focusing on their needs and not others, like Gerald does to Shelia and Eva Smith.
