ECONOMIC - TRANSPORTATION

The automobile was one of the most important inventions of the 1920s because it greatly transformed the landscape and society of the United States. For instance, it lead to the construction of roads such as the infamous Route 66 which went from Chicago to California. This allowed people to travel long distances much more efficiently and quickly. In addition to the change in landscape, the automobiles also launched the construction of many industries in society. The construction of gasoline stations, repair shops, public garages, motels, tourist camps, and shopping centers greatly increased across the entire country all because of one automobile. Similarly, it provided great economic bases for several different cities, in order for them to start and create their own big businesses. For example, many big name tire companies were started in cities such as Akron and Ohio, while cities such as Detroit, Dearborn, Flint, and Pontiac specialized in constructing cars. The automobile was a huge factor in big business because it allowed them to grow and expand their industries across many different areas in the country. This resulted in mass profit and success for these big businesses. Another form of transportation that changed American life was the airplane industry. This successful industry started off as a mail-carrying service for the U.S Post Office, which allowed people to communicate through letters across the entire country. After the installment of delivering mail, airplanes also began transporting radios and navigational instruments, which allowed the entire country to consume these projects more efficiently. The rise or the popularity of airplanes started to increase due to Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart because they began promoting cargo and commercial airlines, which later led to Pan American Airways , which commenced the first transatlantic passenger flights. People could know travel at a faster rate than driving on route 66, which greatly changed society. One final industry that had a tremendous effect on American life was the railroad industry. The construction of the Transcontinental Railroad was massive because it stretched from the east all the way to the west in 1869. At first the railroad was greatly used but once the automobile and airplane industry came around, the use of the railroad began decreasing greatly. The use of cars became much more common and more reliable than the railroad industry, and flying by plane was much more quicker than traveling by railroad. Thus, the railroad industry became less common during the Roaring Twenties.

POLITICAL - HARDING'S TAX POLICY

At the end of World War 1 many problems erupted concerning arms control, war debts, and the reconstruction of war-torn countries and even more conflicts broke out when Britain and France had to pay back the $10 billion they borrowed from the United States. In order to solve this huge issue, Warren G. Harding (the president at the time), sought to decrease taxes on the richest Americans and to cut the federal budget in order to pull the nation out of hard times. This ended up being effective but only for a short amount of time. This was supposed to solve the whole issue but it ended up not even solving half of it. They would need something much more effective than this to solve Germany's issue of war reparations. This is where The Dawes Plan came into effect. This was an initial plan to resolve the war reparations that Germany still had to pay, due to the fact that they could not afford to. In order to solve this huge problem a group of experts along with the president at the time, Charles G. Dawes met in order to reduce the reparations for Germany. Over time, many U.S banks lended Germany enough money to pay for their war reparations. They lended money through France and Great Britain, which used their reparations from Germany in order to pay their war debts to the United States. The Dawes Plan turned out to be a great success because it solved Britains, Frances, and Germany's war debt. Without the Dawes Plan, none of the war reparations would have most likely never gotten paid, resulting in a even more damaged economy.

First off, The Great Migration was the large-scale movement of thousands of southern African Americans to cities in the North. There are many reasons as to why the African American's wanted to leave the South, one being the harsh Jim Crow Laws, which heavily segregated the blacks. Yes, the African Americans still faced segregation and discrimination in the north but it wasn't nearly was bad as the south.Another huge push factor was many new job opportunities that were available in the north than the south. This meant that the blacks could much better jobs and higher pay.

CULTURAL - THE JAZZ AGE

Once African Americans arrived in the North, they had set a goal for themselves to be seen just as equally and beautiful as everyone else. Many African Americans ended up traveling to Harlem a neighborhood in New York's Manhattan Island. Harlem ended up suffering from many problems such as unemployment, poverty and overcrowding but this didn't stop people from getting creative. This became known as the Harlem Renaissance, which was a literary and artistic movement celebrating African American culture. This movement was proudly led by well-educated, middle-class African Americans who celebrated their heritage and wrote about the injustices between the whites and blacks in the world. Many famous poets erupted from this era such as Claude Mckay and Langston Hughes. These talented people popularized black culture because people saw how influential African Americans can truly be and many were shocked by this. They judged them so much only based on their ethnicity that they were shocked when they had "actual talent". People began seeing African Americans as actual human beings with rights rather than just blacks who were "different" from everyone else.

Mass advertising played a huge role in the American economy during the 1920s because it made many products look as though it was a necessity to have, which resulted in even higher consumer rates. Advertising agencies stopped informing society about the actual products and the prices agencies. Instead, they hired psychologists to analyze how to make products more appealing for consumers. For instance, the slogan "Say it with flowers" increased florists' businesses by 2 times between 1912 and 1924. This is how they used slogans such as this to make it seem like certain products were essential to have in every day life. As a result of this form of mass advertising, many companies were able to become a lot more profitable and successful during this era, which also helped to boost the American economy. In addition to mass advertising, electrical conveniences also played a huge role in the American economy. The first useful convenience was gasoline because it became a major part of the economic boom due to the increasing demand for it. As more and more automobiles were manufactured, the demand for gas went up, which means the prices went up, thus affecting the American economy in a very helpful and effective way. In addition to gasoline, the use of electricity transformed America greatly because it was used in many ways. For instance, American factories used it to operate. Electricity became even more widespread when the development of an alternating electrical current broke out, which allowed electricity to be run over much longer distances.

The installment plan enabled people to buy goods over an extended period, without having to put down much money at the time of purchase. This basically meant that American's could receive a loan from the bank and pay everything back at a later time. This was a positive and bad thing at the time because it helped people who struggled with a low income but it could also just keep adding up debt to ones life. Therefore, the installment plan fueled a superficial prosperity because people viewed it as being rich when they received a loan but in reality they were just racking on even more and more debt to there lives. People thought that they would look prosperous when they did this but it was the complete opposite.

Some businesses including farmers did not do so well during this era simply because many of them weren't needed anymore due to the new and advanced technology that had come about and taken over just about every aspect in life. For example railroads weren't needed anymore due to the development of automobiles and airplanes which could transport products much more efficiently. Farms became more unheard of due to the fact that new machinery could produce more food than was needed, and this caused the prices of food to decrease.

POLITICAL - TEAPOT DOME SCANDAL

The Teapot Dome Scandal was a prime example of corruption because the government of the U.S had saved oil-rich public lands at Teapot Dome, Wyoming, and Elk Hills, California in order for the U.S Navy to use it. Albert B. Fall, a close friend to many oil executives, somehow got the oil reserves transferred from the navy to the Interior Department. Then, Fall leased the land to two private oil companies. He then received more than $400,000 in "loans, bonds, and cash." As a result of this, he was found guilty of bribery and became the first American to be convicted of a felony while holding a cabinet post. This resulted in the damage of Harding's Administration because it greatly ruined his reputation as a leader of the United States and his administration received a really bad reputation due to all of the corruption that was going on.
