They did this because Vicksburg was next to the Mississippi River, and a Union controlled Vicksburg would mean the Confederacy would be split in 2. If the Union won, they would also have full control of the Mississippi River. The Union general for this battle was General Ulysses S. Grant, and the Confederate general was General John C. Pemberton. There were a total of 4,910 Union casualties to almost 8 times that with 32,363 Confederate casualties. The Union won this battle, which became one of the most important victories in all the Civil War.

Mississippi was overrun by Union troops as the Vicksburg Campaign was going on, which split the Confederacy in 2, with Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas on one side of the River, and all the others on the other side. Mississippi was also affected because of how many Confederate troops were killed there in the battles.

The Battle of Corinth took place in Corinth, MS. The Confederates looked to destroy Grant's 25,000 troop army, knowing his army didn’t have as many people as it did before it was split up. The Unions looked to attempt small operations along the Mississippi. Although the Confederates had more troops, Grant’s army won. This was an important battle as it allowed Grant to settle down in Corinth and start planning the First Vicksburg Campaign.

John J. Pettus

John J Pettus was the governor of Mississippi from 1859-1863. He believed that Mississippi made the right decision to secede, and greatly helped with arming and training troops during his time. After going out of office in 1863, he went into the army and served until the war was over.

John C. Pemberton

John C. Pemberton was a general in the War, and was the Confederate general in the Battle of Vicksburg. Despite being a Confederate general, Pemberton was born and raised in Philadelphia. He attended West Point in New York, and graduated in 1837. In October of 1862, Pemberton was made Lieutenant General and was given command over Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Following orders from President Davis, Pemberton created defenses in Vicksburg. After surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant on July 4, 1863, he resigned as Lieutenant General.
