There are a lot of similarities between To Kill A Mockingbird and Just Mercy. The big, main similarity is that Harper Lee based the made-up town of Maycomb, Alabama on Monroeville, where Just Mercy takes place. Both Stevenson and Atticus Finch are lawyers, they were taking on cases in which it was white man vs. black man. In the case of Stevenson he was able to free his client while Atticus was not able to free himself before Tom was killed. On page 104 Atticus says, “‘Tom’s dead.... They shot him…’”. Atticus was never able to repeal the trial because Tom tried to run. Tom felt hopeless and as though death was inevitable. In the movie, Stevenson was reminded that he “oughta go see the Mockingbird museum” every time he tried to take legal action for his client. They repeated that it was a great piece of Civil Rights history even though Atticus was a fictitious character and was not able to free his client. It seemed to be a foreshadowing statement towards Bryan saying that he too would not be able to free his client. Both Stevenson and Finch took on cases that held high emotion. The town was very connected to the people who were murdered and took the side of the white man.

The book is a story of betrayal and the fight between good and evil. The townspeople feel betrayed by Atticus Finch while Tom Robinson feels betrayed by Mayella Ewell when she knows he has done nothing wrong. Tom Robinson says on page 86, “‘ Mr. Finch if you was a n***** like me, you’d be scared too.’” Robinson knew as soon as Mayella kissed him, that it was going to be very bad for him and he was going to be betrayed by not only, but by all of the town. This kiss can be directly related to “The Kiss of Judas”. The painting “The Kiss of Judas” portrays betrayal. Judas kisses Jesus, a physical portrayal of love, but uses it against him. The locking of the eyes in the painting shows the hurt Jesus feels from being betrayed by one who was supposed to be closest to him. Mayella Ewell literally uses a kiss to try and betray him. The townspeople feel betrayed by Atticus because he is representing a black man. The townspeople figuratively run around carrying torches waiting for someone to signal who they should attack next. They even literally followed Atticus to try and attack him. It says on page 66, “As Atticus’ fists went to his hips, so did Jem’s… grabbed Jem roughly by the collar...” The mob mentality caused them to follow Bob Ewell to attack Atticus and kill Tom. Atticus, Tom, Jem, Scout, and all the people of color in the town feel betrayed by the jury when the results of the trial are that Tom Robinson is guilty. It says on page 93, “‘How could they do it, how could they?’” After all the evidence Atticus presented, somehow Tom was still found guilty and Jem especially feels betrayed by the community.

Atticus Finch immediately shows a very progressive way of parenting from the beginning of the book. He was assertive in communicating. On page 8 Scout asks if they are poor. Most parents would not be willing to share that information with their young child, but Atticus simply says, “‘We are indeed.” Atticus explains to the children that although they are poor, they have it better than some people and that is enough. He even explained to them why they were poor. In the time period of the book, many children were not given the ability to learn and grow on their own, they were told to think how their parents did. For example, Cecil Jacobs, “had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout FInch’s daddy defended n******.” (page 33). Cecil was in elementary school and should have had no idea what that word meant, but he heard his parents say it was bad, so he told everyone that the Finches were awful people. Scout and Jem were raised to be kind to everyone no matter what. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (page 13). When Atticus said that, it stuck with Scout and she tried to always put it in practice. Atticus allowed for Jem and Scout to form their own opinions while he instilled knowledge in them in a way that they could understand; even at such a young age.

Reputation by Taylor Swift is an album of overcoming and growing as a person. Swift is showing how she is a better person now and that she is stronger than ever. It is a coming of age story. Taylor Swift in a way reminds me of Scout, spunky girls who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Harper Lee continuously toys with the idea of good versus evil. What is good and why do people have different ideas of good and evil. Tom, Atticus, and Jem, for example, are under the impression that Tom is innocent and that good will come when presented with the correct evidence. On page 97, it says, “You can’t just convict a man on evidence like that- you can’t.” In Taylor Swift’s song “I Did Something Bad,” a lyric reads, “They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one They got their pitchforks and proof Their receipts and reasons”. Again in “Call it What You Want”, Swift sings, “All the liars are calling me one.” It relates to the idea that good should win, but it doesn’t always. With mob mentality, like in “To Kill a Mockingbird”, whatever the mob believes goes. Swift goes on to accept this metaphorical murder by saying, “light me up”. She has accepted that she can’t change what they think even if presented with the truth. Atticus has accepted that the town does not agree with him and his truth, even though it is not right. He says, “They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it-seems only children weep.” (page 93).

“New Year’s Day” reminds me of how Scout feels at the end of the novel. In the song, Swift wraps up the album by expressing her feeling of wanting to hold onto her spontaneous years and the memories she made. At the end of the novel, Jem begins middle school and Scout doesn’t get to see him as often. She walks past the Radley house every day and thinks back to the memories they had made. “The Radley house had ceased to terrify me, but it was no less gloomy…” (page 107). She has grown up and is no longer the scared girl walking past the house. She has learned lessons like Swift has throughout her album. “Don’t read the last page”, Swift learns to live in the moment and enjoy what she has now. Scout learned to not rush into growing up like she did at the beginning of the novel. She becomes a young lady.

One main topic of “To Kill a Mockingbird” is racism. It was a revolutionary book because it told the story of racism through the eyes of white children. The main characters in the book are against racism, but are surrounded by those who hate that they are accepting of people of color. The Finches have a house maid, Calpurnia, but she is more like a mother figure to the children and even takes them to church. Jem and Scout were confused why they did not have any song books. On page 54 Calpurnia says, “‘Wouldn’t do any good… They can’t read.” In that time segregation was still prevalent and black children were not able to get the same education as white children. Cal helped open the eyes of the children to see that they do not get the same opportunities. Tom Robinson also knew that he did not get the same chance at justice like white people. He knew sooner or later he was going to be killed. In the poem Black Laws, the author expresses how he is just waiting for his time to be killed. He says in line 9, “You predicted my death with my own baby teeth…” The reader can infer that from the time he was born, the author felt like a dead man walking. Tom Robinson also felt like a dead man walking. The whole town was against him. After the first trial, Tom tries to make a run for it. After Tom’s death, Atticus says, “I guess Tom was tired of white men’s chances and preferred to take his own.” (pg. 104). Tom didn’t believe that they would be able to win the repeal trial. They had so much evidence for the first trial, what would make this one any different. He knew that he was dead one way or another, so he took his life into his own hands. Line 13 of “Black Laws” says, “They already shot the black boy on the road for dying without their permission.” Tom wanted to die on his own terms, but the police men shot him seventeen times to make sure he didn’t get that chance. (pg. 104). Atticus thought they had a good chance of winning the case, but it was not enough for Tom. Racism was so ingrained into their society, that he knew it was just a matter of time for him. Like Roger Reeves says in “Black Laws”, “Yes, gal, I put on my nice suit. And wait.” (line 14).

The death of Bob Ewell came as a surprise to the readers. Harper Lee used his death to illustrate the idea that mockingbirds can be unexpected and are revealed through growth. Scout knew throughout the book that Tom Robinson was a mockingbird because he did not hurt Bob Ewell’s daughter and was still found guilty. However, she was still scared of Boo Radley even though he had never hurt her. When Bob Ewell attacks her and Jem, she finds out that Boo is the one that saves them. She realizes that he too is a mockingbird and she no longer fears him.
