         <description><![CDATA[<div>After World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union<br>were the world’s strongest nations. Called superpowers. They fought a war called the Cold War.<br>The Soviet Union was a communist country. It decides<br>where people live and work. The United States is a capitalist<br>country. People decide where they live and work.<br>The Cold War began in Europe after World War II. The<br>Soviet Union won control of Eastern Europe. It controlled<br>half of Germany and half of Germany’s capital, Berlin. The<br>United States, Britain, and France controlled western<br>Germany and West Berlin. In June 1948, the Soviet Union<br>blocked roads and railroads that led to West Berlin. The<br>United States, Great Britain, and France flew in supplies.<br>This was called the Berlin Airlift.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1)&nbsp;<strong>The Yalta and Potsdam conferences were called to help the Allies decide what would happen to Europe, and in particular Germany, at the end of the Second World War. This Revision Bite will help you understand the decisions made at these two important conferences and the differences that emerged between the allied leaders.<br>2)&nbsp;</strong>&nbsp;In June 1948, the Russians–who wanted Berlin all for themselves–closed all highways, railroads and canals from western-occupied Germany into western-occupied Berlin. This, they believed, would make it impossible for the people who lived there to get food or any other supplies and would eventually drive Britain, France and the U.S. out of the city for good. Instead of retreating from West Berlin, however, the U.S. and its allies decided to supply their sectors of the city from the air. <br>3) The <strong>Berlin Blockade</strong> (24 June 1948 – 12 May 1949) was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. During the multinational occupation of post–World War II Germany, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of <strong>Berlin</strong>under Western control.<br>4) the action of keeping something harmful under control or within limits.<br>5)&nbsp;<strong>Marshall Plan definition</strong>. A program by which the United States gave large amounts of economic <strong>aid</strong> to European countries to help them rebuild after the devastation of World War II.
