All of the following 10 examples are prime examples of narratives that are told through art by different artists throughout time. The first example of a narrative is Night Attack on the Sanjô Palace, which depicts the story of a rebel group that is attacking Sanjô Palace in an attempt to kidnap the retired emperor, and it is read from right to left. Another work that shows a narrative is the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the battle of Hastings, and everything leading up to it, from the Norman Conquest. Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Central Park, by Diego Rivera, also shows a narrative of the Mexican people’s history and includes references to Mexico’s original colonization and conquest, to modern Mexican achievements and fights for independence. Another work that depicts a story is Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? by Paul Gauguin. This work is different from the other stories previously mentioned in that it doesn’t depict a specific event, but rather the story of someone from birth, seen on the right, to death, as seen on the left of the work. This person starts as a baby born as a rock and ends up as an old person shriveled up on the left of the work. An Egyptian artwork that depicts a story is the Last Judgment of Hunefer, which shows Hunefer going through the process of being judged by the gods and getting into the underworld. It details this process and shows Hunefer’s heart being weighed, and him presenting himself to all the gods towards the top of the work. Then, the Standard of Ur, has two sides, both that depict different events with 3 registers on each side. The “War” side, depicts different prisoners being presented to the king and even a chariot that some say is moving, because of the way that it is shown. Then there is the “Peace” side, which depicts the people in the country putting on a feast, maybe to celebrate the victory from that very battle depicted on its opposite side. Then, an example of a Global Contemporary work that depicts an event, is Darkytown Rebellion, by Kara Walker. This event didn’t happen, however, it is meant to portray what events like these were like to different people, and this is accomplished by displaying a slave revolt, where many different things are occurring at once, between both white and black characters. An example of early Christian narratives within the image set is the Vienna Genesis, which is an illustrated manuscript of the Old Testament. This displays two original scenes from the Old Testament, one of Jacob wrestling an Angel, and another of Rebecca and Eliezer at the well. Then, Bahram Gur fights the Karg, displays a story from the Shahnama, or the Persian Book of Kings, where Bahram V of the Sasanian empire fights a mythical beast called a Karg. This book was made to glorify the past of the Persian Empire, and establish their legitimacy as a major world nation. Finally, one of the friezes from Borobudur temple, that displays Siddhartha Gautama‘s mother on her way to the place where the Buddha would be born is a garden of pleasure.
