As you can see the people looked really skinny during the Japanese Occupation due to the lack of food. And also, these people are actually slaves. They work really hard and they do chores that are really tough. But they get very little food. And all they can do is to continue what they are told to do without bargaining.

Source 7

I can infer that u have to be English educated to get a good job and that during that time students could not study in peace due to the release of national service(NS).

This can be seen from the little comic from the textbook pg 79. Where they state that the British colonial government introduced NS and people of the age of 18-20years of age must register for NS. Many of the Chinese middle school students where affected as they were in the appropriate age range to join NS.This disrupted their studies and created a misunderstanding among some students where they thought they will be sent to fight in the emergency.

The Chinese middle school students also felt that they were treated unfairly by the British.they questioned the British about the willingness of the British to look after their interests.

I can conclude that the British registration for NS changed students views on the British that they were not interrested in their interests and studies.in the end they demonstrated strikes which was chaotic

These sources show a change when comparing the currency used before and during the Japanese Occupation. Before the Japanese Occupation, the people in Singapore used the Straits dollar when the Presidency of the Straits Settlements came along. This changed when the Japanese started taking over Singapore and changed the currency used to banana money. Banana money was issued by the Japanese to replace the Straits dollar. There was a big change in terms of the quality of the housing. Before the Japanese Occupation which involved bombings for example, the housings were steady and they looked comfortable. During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese then ruined the housing by the bombs. The bombs caused the walls of the housings to crack. The lives of the people have also gotten tougher as they have to repair their own housing. There was no change as the jobs the people in Singapore had before and during the Japanese Occupation were still tough. The job as a fishermen is tough as it is very tiring and also they do not earn a lot, they might also have difficulties providing for their families.

The changes in people's lives before and during the Japanese Occupation was extensive. The education was largely changed as different races used to study in their own mother tongues, and during the Japanese Occupation, they studied in Japanese, which gives them no freedom of language. The currency used was also changed from the Straits Settlements' notes to the banana notes by the Japanese. Housing too became worn out because of the Japanese's bombings. However, in the perspective of jobs, they did not change much as they continued working as fishermen and so on.

source 33

i can infer that the food back then was running low and there wasnt enough food for everyone to eat but could still survive on things that they can lay their hands on

This can be seen from page 38 source 30 where people are collecting rice to eat.The price of the rice is very expensive to buy and get.
i can conclude that even though food was hard to get and rice was expensive to buy, they try to make use of every part of the fruit you ate.For instance, even the skin from a cempedak can be eaten. The seed, which is hard, can be boiled until it becomes soft and edible. You can even eat the shells of groundnuts.
