Grant tells the children about all of the madness going on in Bayonne. He tells them that he has to try and make him a man somehow. He really relates to the students and kind of scares them by saying, 'Do you all know what is going to happen to someone just like you who sat right where you're sitting only a few years ago?'. He is doing this in an effort to get the students to take learning seriously or else they could end up like him.

Grant's Response

"To die with some dignity, I suppose. I suppose that's what she wants" was Grant's response to Sam Guidry (49, ALBD). This is important because this is the first time Grant gave a clear reply on the topic. Up till this point, he has been against this idea. We think that Ms. Emma wants Jefferson to be a man before he dies because if Jefferson dies a hog, he would only be remembered as a hog, and not a man. This is for his dignity, as well for his legacy.

The point of making Grant wait is to show a sense of superiority over him. They also wanted to make Grant feel like he is not intelligent and doesn't deserve to be in a conversation with them. So he is left to wait for almost two and a half hours.

He shows that he has to listen to what the school board says, even if it is unfair. By telling the children to save the chalk, Grant is teaching them the challenges that colored people have to face in society.
