Why? Because even when everything was fiction, there was some truth and reality in it. And when this person had the opportunity to give up, he didn't because that would go against his values. He, instead of giving up, decided to fight in order to get what he wanted. Even when that almost costed his life.
He suffered so much, and instead of living a life full of vengeance, he decided to move on because that would make him a better person, that would make his parents proud of him.
