In the novel, Charles Halloway seems like a kind and caring father to Jim. After seeing Jim and Will at the library he started to remember what it was like to be a kid. He can tell that Jim is adventurous while Will is much more cautious and always thinks before he acts. Charles worries that one day Will will get hurt by Jim's risk-taking actions. Every night Charles Halloway goes to a bar for his nightly drink. He goes there to try to calm himself down because a part of him still wants to be young like Will and Jim. Even though Will might get hurt he still thinks that Jim and Will are a good pair.

In chapter 4, at around 9 p.m., Will and Jim went running through town. There was not a single person outside. Then Will and Jim spotted Mr. Crossetti locking up his barber-shop because the storm was coming. As they approached him they saw his fingers trembling. Once Mr. Crossetti turned around Will and Jim saw a teardrop on his cheek. The boys made fun of his tears and asked him if he smelt the scent of cotton candy in the air. After they brought it to Mr. Crossetti’s attention he realized that the smell of the cotton candy was coming from the carnival in town. It made him cry because it reminded him of his youth. Then he drove away.

In chapter 5, Charles Halloway finished his drink and left the bar. As he exited he saw a man putting up posters in an empty store. After the man left, Charles went inside the store to look at the poster which advertised the show Cooger & Darks Pandemonium Shadow Show. In the shop, there was a giant block of ice which the poster stated was the Most Beautiful Woman in the World. Charles Halloway wanted to leave but he found the block of ice so mesmerizing that it took him a while before he could.

In chapter 6 Jim stopped on History Street and told Will that he wanted to go to the place called the “Theater”. On another day, while the boys were at the “Theater” stealing fruit in the surrounding trees, they happened to look through the window and saw people naked and doing things that they both didn't understand. This was why Will didn't like the Theater, so when Jim wanted to go there he took Will's books and walked home as quickly as possible.

Maybe something is” (Chapter 6, Page 26). This quote shows Jim’s personality of how he wants to know what’s going to happen, and what else there is in store for him.

2. The carnival advertises on a poster to display to the public “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World!” (Chapter 5, Page 24). This quote is important because it foreshadows that something is going to happens later in the novel that involves the most beautiful woman in the world which is a giant block of ice.
