I've had the pleasure of experiencing Alan November talk on 2 separate occasions over the past decade in two separate districts. His message has been clear for years, however we seem to be slow to change in education. Before moving back to TX, I was out of the classroom as an instructional coach. Returning to the classroom has given me the opportunity to tinker, practice, and implement this way of teaching and learning but I now recognize that I need to stretch myself further and to not let the weight of teaching an AP class (time excuse) and instead move forward knowing that I can do a better job designing better learning experiences. Feedback from my Ss often reflects that how we do school in my class is different. I'm often met with push-back and obstacles based on the standardization expected between teachers in AP Classes which is a struggle. However, on the other hand many of my students reach out later to express how much they learned that can be applied elsewhere and how the way we learned helped them with college. AVID's 4A's model does a fantastic job of showing how to MEANINGFULLY & WITH PURPOSE integrate technology at various levels. The learning framework also showcases best practices (beyond tech), moving from teacher-led to student-led teaching and learning. While the emphasis is not on having ALL learning/activities/projects at the "Advocate" level, I think we also need to recognize and step away from always remaining in the "Adopt" or "Adapt" levels as well.
