What is Culture to me?

Culture is many things, things that surround us that we have control over, others that we do not. Others still, minute, micro-decisions that we make to keep control over our situation, any situation.

This can be seen in many aspects of our lives, our demeanor, race, community, even aforementioned minute, controlled decisions, such as the font, style, and other elements used in this post.

To me - culture is my family, my friends, my immediate environment. My environment (in my mind at least) are my immediate circumstances that I cannot necessarily or immediately change.

My gender can also be considered my culture, in a number of ways - the fact that I identify as male, and there are certain "cultural" ideals in our area of what the typical "man" does - more traditional roles, such as the breadwinner, somewhat more detached emotionally.

The area in which I live (separate from my environment) could also be considered part of culture. I find this the most interesting, as this is literally the houses in my neighborhood, religion, politics, and professions aside. I live in an area of the top of Lehi that has an extremely high water table, and as such, all of the homeowners in the area band together throughout the year to help each other with basement flooding and the like. It has certainly created a culture for us, especially in our immediate circle.

Bringing it all back around, I think the best way I could explain my culture or really anyone’s culture, it simply, “Culture is as culture does”, meaning that there’s no one way that any two people will perceive the same type of culture in the same way. Quite literally everything we do and everything we experience can be considered part of our culture.
