My surprise was again the timing surrounding university evolution. The demographic shift that occurred happened only recently. The universities had to undergo administrative changes and be coerced by the federal government before the act of admissions equity could be achieved.

It was interesting to learn that Ohio State Athletics used some “athletics dollars” for improvements on campus including the university library and that unfortunately, this was they were an exception and not the norm. According to Thelin, only 17 athletic programs in the NCAA Division I were self-supporting and most cost more to operate than the funds they were able to bring in from ticket sales and donations. I don’t think many people think about the financial investment needed to fund a strong athletic program that meets the requirements of the governing bodies, regardless if the team is winning or losing.

The change in student demographic was interesting to me. To learn that minorities not discussed throughout the text were acknowledged towards the end such as hispanics in rising enrollments and accounting for most student enrollments presently today
was very interesting.
