Africans have experienced tremendous amounts of discrimination from people who fear that they will contract HIV/AIDS from them. (Sabatier, 1988). Unfortunately, HIV/AIDS has become incredibly prevalent in Africa, this is due to the fact that Africa as a whole has a poor health care system that does not allow people living with HIV/AIDS to access the medication to assist with the disease. From this, people have blamed Africans for the increasing spread of HIV/AIDS also leading to induced amounts of racism following. Due to colonisation Africa has seized to remain a nation that has oppressed citizens who do not have the same access as the western world. HIV and aids were often referred to as the 'Gay Disease' which helped to encourage homophobia and homophobic notions around LGBTQI people. Homophobia continues to be a huge barrier in trying to end the stigmatisation and negative notions towards people living with HIV/aids. At the start of the HIV epidemic, gay men were frequently accused of being the spreaders of HIV. From this, the LGBTQI people face continuous discrimination due to this misconception. They face continuous violence, human rights violations and stigmas.(Sigel, Lune & Myer, 1998) The stigma surrounding HIV/aids made it incredibly challenging for LGBTQI people to seek help and support. Not only were they denied assistance but they were outed from their community and people around them. LGBTQI people living with HIV were often denied health and support services leading to eventual death. From the discrimination, homophobia and negative connotations that were linked to having HIV/aids a lot of people did not come out and ask for help. According to Lim Halimatusa’diyah HIV/AIDS causes moral injury for people, including women. HIV/AIDS has become more prevalent amongst women. The increase of the disease amongst women has also created women to feel an immense amount of negativity and dehumanisation. The idea is that having HIV/AIDS is often linked to being immoral and that a person living with HIV/AIDS should feel shame and guilt. The society we live in also places rules around women and their sexuality women are to be 'sexy but not sexual'. Therefore, if a woman is diagnosed with HIV/AIDS they are shamed and made feel disgusting.
