Juniors family is affected by alcohol abuse because they lose people they love to it. Junior talks about his grandma and says
"My grandmother’s last act on earth was a call for forgiveness, love, and tolerance.
She wanted us to forgive Gerald, the dumb-🤬 Spokane Indian alcoholic who ran her over and killed her."(Alexie) This shows what kind of person Juniors grandmother was. Even after death she is forgiving.

When the holidays came, Junior’s family didn’t have money for presents. He tells us his father did what he always does when they don’t have enough money. He takes the little money they have and runs away to drink. Junior’s father gets drunk for a week and gave Junior five dollars for Christmas. This made Junior feel happy. He says, “He could have spent that five bucks and stayed drunk for another day or two. But he saved it for me” (Alexie). This shows that Junior understands his father’s situation.

Junior is growing up with people being affected by alcohol and he’s mad. Junior doesn’t like alcohol because it kills. “THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO GET RUN OVER AND KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER!“(Alexie). Junior would listen to his grandmothers wisdom about alcohol and how it affects the human body. “Drinking would shut down my seeing and my hearing and my feeling,” she used to say. “Why would I want to be in the world if I couldn’t touch the world with all of my senses intact?”(Alexie)-Juniors grandma used to say.

I believe Junior’s holidays are always the same, full of tragic. Junior explains, “When the holidays rolled around, we didn’t have any money for presents, so Dad did what he always does when we don’t have enough money. He took what little money we did have and ran away to get drunk” (Alexie). Reading this made me feel Junior’s sorrow. This shows how at this point, Junior is already used to this.

Alcoholism in Junior’s family

Alcohol impacts Junior’s family by for example, not spending the holidays. Instead of Junior’s father staying home and spending time with his family, he goes off to drink. His father doing this breaks Junior’s heart. Junior says, “For some reason, I was protecting the feelings of the man who had broken my heart yet again” (Alexie). This just shows Junior’s father’s actions hurt Junior.

Junior’s life is surrounded with Alcohol. Junior decides to transfer to an all white school. I believe Junior did this to have a future, to not end up like his parents. Especially, like his father. His father isn’t really a father figure. He’s pretty much just addicted to alcohol. Mr. P once tells Junior, “You’re going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation” (Alexie). This shows how moving to Reardan was the best thing that ever happened to Junior. An away from alcohol.

The community

The entire community is affected by alcohol. For example, most of them are drinkers. Junior’s father, the father’s best friend, Rowdy’s father and more. Junior’s grandmother was struck by a drunk driver. Her funeral brings the community together. Junior explains, “Grandparents are supposed to die first, but they’re supposed to die of old age. They’re supposed to die of a heart attack or a stoke or of cancer or of Alzheimer’s. THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO GET RUN OVER AND KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER” (Alexie). This shows how alcoholism affects his community.
