Their eyes turned gold and their skin changed to a dark color. The text also shows how they gained the psychological mindset of a Martian. The physiological change to Martians started slowly but then began to pick up speed and eventually they Bitterings became Martians. The changes started with a small change in behavior as if they were acting strange and something was in their head. They soon started speaking Martian and changed their names. Therefore, the changes that take place in the Bitterings change them physically and psychologically in Martians.

The passage states that the people with the lieutenant wanted  to rename the mountains, valleys, canals, hills, and rivers but the lieutenant wasn’t listening to him because he was staring at the mountains. This probably mean he will stay on Mars and turn into a Martian. Therefore, the lieutenant will probably send more people to Mars.
