The Childhood Practice team deliver a variety of courses across all of our campuses, offering qualifications that support students in developing their careers working with children and young people. These courses are designed to give a secure underpinning knowledge of working in the Childhood Sector however the placement element is vital in allowing our students to make links between the theory and practice giving them the necessary experience and skill development to enter confidently into the work force.
HNC students will organise and receive a visit from their allocated SVQ Assessor on the placement. The student should discuss the visit with the placement supervisor to ensure it occurs at an appropriate time to suit the setting.

During the visit the assessor will be looking for the students to demonstrate their abilities of working with children and staff in relation to communication, health and safety and reflecting on and developing their practice. The students will be briefed on this before the visit.

You will take part in Forest Kindergarten training, a 3 day accredited course which will run at the beginning of your course and outdoor learning activities throughout your course and placement.
We recommend you have some sturdy shoes, layers, a waterproof jacket and warm socks so you can participate and enjoy these activities that are an essential part of working with children. You can often find these in local charity shops.

Additional needs

Our Learning Support team offers a voluntary and confidential service to help students who tell us about a disability or additional support need. We help students who disclose:

A specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD or ADD.

An autistic spectrum condition.
Mental ill-health.
A physical impairment.
Long-term illness.

The Learning Support team can help with applications for the Disabled Students Allowance for those who are coming onto a HNC or HND course.

Learning Support process

When you apply, include your disability or additional support need in your application.
Our Learning Support Team will contact you to arrange a meeting using your preferred communication method.
You will need to share any learning support evidence you have. A member of the team can advise on what evidence is needed. This could be letters, certificates, a dyslexia screening report or an educational psychologist report.
Your Learning Support Advisor will create a personal learning support plan with you. They will work with teaching teams to ensure that any recommended alternative assessment arrangements are appropriate.

The HNC Childhood Practice course equips you with the knowledge and skills to become a qualified early years practitioner. My experiences with the course have been mostly positive but there were moments where I felt slightly stressed. This is why making sure you plan your time wisely and keep organized in HNC is very important. There are often a couple assessments due close in date with one another, so it is vital that you do not leave one of them too late and try set a specific designated time for each to stay on top of them all. Balancing graded unit amongst other assessments can be challenging but graded unit is something that you get offered plenty support on and get enough time to complete. If you are asking what the graded unit is, it is something very interesting, it is an individual piece of work where you choose a topic in childhood practice that you feel passionate about and complete a variety of different types of research to find out more about your chosen topic. So, ensuring you follow the graded unit guidelines, stick to your topic and work wisely with your time it should be an enjoyable learning experience. In HNC whilst doing your 2 days placement a week it is important to become involved in as many things as you can to support your learning and practice and this will support you with many of your plans with SVQ, so being involved in risk assessment, leading activities with the children, helping prepare snack are all things that you get asked about in your SVQ plans so gaining this experience will make this much easier. I have found all the lecturers to be very involved and enthusiastic, they all offered me guidance and support throughout the course and offered time for catch ups, so I believe you will have the same experience. For those of you who are about to go into this course next in the next few months, I wish you the best of luck, I am sure you will find it as fulfilling that I did.
