Before, I believe that teacher-centered education is the more effective strategy in classroom, where students put all of their focus on the teacher. The teacher was the only one talking and the students will exclusively listen. I always thought that when education is teacher-centered, the classroom remains orderly. Through teacher-centered approach students do behave accordingly and only the teacher has the full control of the classroom and its activities. Students will learn independence and make their own decisions. And because the teacher direct all classroom activities, she/he don’t have to worry that students will miss an important topic.

7

BELIEFS ON TEACHING AND LEARNING (POST)

After my observations, my beliefs has change. It made me realize that student-centered is also an effective strategy. When a classroom operates with student-centered instruction, students and teachers share the focus. Instead of listening to the teacher exclusively, students and teachers interact equally. Group work is encouraged, and students learn collaborate and communicate with one another. Students learn to direct their own learning, ask questions, and complete tasks independently. I observed that student are more interested in learning activities when they can interact with one another and participates. Now, I believe that the use of combination of two approaches ensure that all student needs are met. Based on my observations during my field study, students tend to learn when they experience learning by doing and not just listening to the teacher. According to Bowers and Flinders (1990), students maximizes their learning when they learn by doing and experiencing rather than observing the teacher. As a future educator, I believe that students have better performance when they are asked to think about they are interested to learn instead of doing the thinking for them.

8

REFLECTION

When I first entered Taligaman National High School I wasn’t sure of how I would fit into world of education as a teacher. After my observation was done I changed my view of this and knew that I would make a great teacher. I was able to learn many different things that will be helpful to me when I get hired as an educator someday. Despite the fact that I will have to face numerous challenges in the classroom, I think I possess the strengths that takes to be a good teacher. There were many times during the week that gave me a great idea of how the everyday life of a teacher would go. Also I got a great feel for how the classroom environment will be for most secondary educators. Overall it was a great experience for me and I learned a lot about myself, and the classroom.

During my time in the classroom or outside the classroom, whenever the students would greet me and call me ma’am like “good morning ma’am” “good afternoon ma’am”, “hi/hello ma’am”, hearing these greetings from students really melted my heart and it inspired and motivated me more to pursue this teaching profession. I felt very comfortable being around the students and helping them out when they asked me questions. As a teacher it is very important to feel comfortable in our work environment because if we don’t, it will be nearly impossible for us to do our job in a successful manner. It was a great experience being around the students and being able to help them, which is one of the main reason for why I want to become involved in the profession. The classroom environment was a very inconsistent one and usually depended on how the students acted. If the students were well behaved it was very positive and constructive, but if the students were acting up it was exactly the opposite. I observed that the classrooms are clean, roomy, and well-ventilated and have enough spaces for teaching and learning. The arm chairs were lined up and the room was decorated with colorful walls from posters to help create a positive classroom environment. Overall the classroom environment was set up to give each student the best possible chance they had to succeed.

From my observation, I believe the teacher involved the students a good amount during lectures and assignments. For example, during lectures on chapter the teacher included a guided reading. After each time the lecture got to a point where a question could be answered the teacher would call on a student to answer. I find this to be a very effective method because it is both informational and fun for the student by keeping them involved. Throughout my observation there were many interactions between the student and teacher, either being very positive, or negative. I would have to say though that there were many more negative interactions than positive ones during the observation. Most days the teacher would continuously have to remind the students to go back to their seats, to stop talking when it is not necessary, and avoid using cellphones during the class and I observed that the teacher didn’t take actions to stop this kind of behavior of the students. For me, she can directly confiscate the cellphone if she sees someone use their cellphone during her lectures since the students are already reminded at the beginning of the class about the classroom rules and regulations. Some students don’t pay respect to the teacher. I believe that I will face this kind of challenges as I enter into the profession of teaching, but I still want to pursue this. The main problem I see myself having is keeping my calm with students when they are acting up. In teaching this will happen a lot because they have different behavior as they grow from the different kind of environment. A way for me to face this challenge is to remember how I have seen teachers handle similar situations and not get mad too fast. I do believe there is a point when it is required to get angry and scold a student though, but I will do it in good way and not in front of their peers. There is one professional developmental goal that I would want to incorporate with my teaching someday, which is being able to find different ways to teach students so that the information sticks. During my observation there were many times when the student was just not able to grasp the material no matter how hard they tried because they could not follow the teacher’s style. This is the main reason why I feel it is important for me to get to know my students better and find out the best way to teach them. If I am able to find the best and most effective way to help my students learn then they will reach their highest potential as a student. I know this won’t be an easy process or happen over night, but after a few years in the career I hope to develop into this type of teacher. I have learned many different key teaching components throughout my observation. Whether it be how to run a classroom, or setting up a positive classroom environment I now know a lot more than I did. Someday when I do reach my goal of becoming a teacher I hope to apply some of the things I have learned from this experience to create a successful classroom and environment.

14
