Before the movement itself, it's best to understand the context of the event. After the Mexican-American war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. This led to many unfair principles falling upon Mexican Americans; they lost their land and civil rights. The Chicano Movement is a social reform for Mexican-American fundamental rights. The fire that started the Chicano Movement was the Zoot Suit Riots, which took place in California. These were examples of brutality upon Mexican-Americans simply because they wore suits that contained a specific type of fabric that was needed during wartime. This led to the action of Cesar Chavez, who decided to take action against poor working conditions when farming. Chavez succeeded and got several union contracts granting better working conditions. Another vital person in the Chicano Movement was Reies Lopez Tijerina. He took back land which the government had taken away from the Chicanos by assaulting a capital. While he did get caught, he sparked many young Mexican-Americans into involving themselves in this movement for their rights. The decline of the Chicano Movement started after the end of a peaceful protest that turned violent. The Chicano Moratorium was a combination of several Chicano activist groups. Even a paramilitary group fighting for Chicano civil rights, known as the Brown Berets, was involved. After the innocent killing of three people, these social reform groups disbanded, and the movement began to slow down. The Chicano Movement was an essential step in the history of Mexican-American civil rights, social injustice, and racism.
