1. The Big Ask: Matchmaking

Before the wedding, the groom and his older, wiser family members visit the bride's house for Svatannya (matchmaking). If the bride says "yes," she gives them beautiful rushnyky (embroidered towels).

2. The Magic Bread: Korovai

You can't have a wedding without a korovai! This is a giant, fancy bread decorated with dough birds and flowers. It is baked by women who have very happy families because people believe their "good luck" will rub off on the new couple.

3. The Ransom: Vykup

This is the funny part! Before the groom can see the bride, her family "hides" her. The groom has to pass silly tests or pay a Vykup (ransom) of sweets or coins to prove he is worthy of his bride.

4. The Blessing and the Towel

The parents bless the couple using the korovai and special icons. The couple then stands on a rushnyk . There is a funny legend that says whoever steps on the towel first will be the "boss" of the house!

5. Growing Up: Coverings

In this serious moment, the bride's hair is unbraided. Her flower wreath is taken off and replaced with a headscarf called an ochipok . This ceremony, called pokryttya, shows she is moving from being a girl to a grown-up married woman.

Special Symbols:

• Hyltse: A small tree branch decorated with colorful ribbons and flowers. It represents the bride's beauty.

• Kalyna (Viburnum): Bright red berries used to decorate the bread; they represent family and health.

• Grain Showering: When the couple leaves the ceremony, guests toss grain, coins, and candy at them. It's like a "good luck" shower for a wealthy life!

• Vyshyvanky: The couple wears beautifully embroidered shirts. The bride usually wears a bright wreath of fresh flowers on her head.

Today, we might use cars instead of horses, but the heart of the wedding—family, blessings, and a huge community party—is still exactly the same as it was a hundred years ago!

• Melpomena of Tavria (Kherson): An international, multi-day theater festival.

• Sweet Wonde (Hola Prystan): A popular festival focused on the region's famous watermelons.

• Kupalski Zori (Hola Prystan): A traditional folk festival.

Before the full-scale invasion, these events drew thousands of attendees. Due to the war, many of these events have been paused or held in alternative formats. 

Syrnyky ( Cheese Pancakes): are small, fluffy pancakes made from tvorog (farmer's cheese). They are golden on the outside, creamy on the inside, and almost always served with a big dollop of sour cream (smetana), honey, or jam.

Nalysnyky: very thin crepes that are usually rolled up with a sweet cheese and raisins, poppy seeds or cherries filling.

Deruny: Crispy potato pancakes. While often eaten for dinner, they are a fantastic, filling breakfast when served with sour cream.

Eggs: Usually fried or scrambled with kovbasa (sausage) or even small bits of salo (cured pork fat) to add a smoky flavor.

Fun Fact: In Ukraine, Sour Cream (Smetana) is like the "secret sauce." We put it on almost everything—syrnyky, deruny, crepes, and even in our porridge!

If you were a guest of arriving honor at a village or a big celebration, you would be met by people wearing vyshyvanky (embroidered shirts) holding a decorated loaf of bread on a long, beautiful rushnyk (embroidered towel).

The Symbolic Meaning:

The Bread: Represents life and the "wealth" of the earth.

The Salt: Represents an eternal bond of friendship and is believed to protect people from "evil eyes."

The Greeting: The guest is expected to break off a small piece of the bread, dip it into the salt, and eat it. This means you accept the host's friendship and protection.

While the word "Khlib" just means bread, for weddings and major celebrations, a special Karavay (or Korovai ) is baked. This isn't your average loaf of bread—it is a work of art! It is covered in dough ornaments like birds (for love), wheat stalks (for prosperity), and periwinkle leaves (for life). It is usually very large and round, symbolizing the sun and a long, full life.In the Kherson region, the Karavay is often decorated with Kalyna (viburnum berries) to bring health and beauty to the family.

Why it Matters

In Ukrainian culture, bread is considered sacred. You never throw it away, and you never place it upside down on a table. When a community shares a Karavay, they are saying that they are all one big family, looking out for each other.

1. They dress up: They wear beautiful traditional costumes.

3. They walk through the village: They go from house to house, singing and dancing.

4. They bring good wishes: They sing songs to wish everyone health and to help the farmers grow lots of fruits and vegetables in their fields.

1. The "Spoon Sweet"

The first thing we bring to the table is a tiny plate with a "Spoon Sweet." These are small pieces of fruit—like cherries, grapes, or orange peels—cooked in sugar until they look like shiny jewels!

How we eat it: We use a tiny spoon and take one bite.

2. The Homemade Drink.

The Rule: We always give an odd number (like 5 or 7). Why? Because an odd number cannot be divided in half. It’s a wish for the couple never to stay apart!

The Rice Shower

When the couple walks around the table in the church, guests throw handfuls of rice at them!

The Wish: The rice is like a "good luck" wish for the couple to have a happy and full life.

Brides usually wear a white dress.

After the ceremony, when the newly wed leave the church or the town hall, their friends an family throw rice to them. This is said to bring 'good luck'.
