I think moving to a standards-based report card would help our school take on a growth mindset. One letter grade on a report card does not show where a student truly is at in our classroom. Teachers and parents (and students) need to remember that students are continually growing in multiple areas within one class. School is about learning and constantly improving. Hopefully, when students are "done" with school, they will understand their role as lifelong learners has only just begun.

I think this is where we need to start shifting our grading practices to align more with a growth mindset as a school. I think we have started to approach this through our work habit grades and the formative/summative grade categories. I think we need to continue to look at what we're assessing and making sure we are giving students ample opportunity and choice (where it is applicable) to show their thinking. Right now, it seems more about the "final product" or grade.

I think that modifying our grading practices and moving toward standards-based grading would help our school embrace the growth mindset. Instead of showing the student is "failing" a certain subject area, they would see that they have not yet met the expectations of certain standards or concepts in that particular area
. I feel that this would lead to fewer shut-down and "why bother" mindsets and create a shift towards the mindsets of lifelong learners and continuous improvement.

Standards based grading starts with the question - "what do we want students to know and be able to do (skills and concepts)?" Then, "what does proficiency look like". From there, it is providing multiple modalities for students to demonstrate their understanding of the learning target/standard and not a 1 format fits all approach.

I do think that moving towards the standards based grading would help students see what they know and what they don't know quite yet. My fear with the standards based is that parents and students would correlate the 1, 2, 3, 4 with D, C, B, A. I would want to go to a 1, 2, 3 rating scale to prohibit that.

I love the idea of moving toward standards based report cards. . I think we will have to dig deeply into the questions of what proficiency looks like. I do not think the 1,2 3, 4 would be as much as an obstacle for us because out Elementary already has this in place and has for at least four years so all of our parents have an understanding.

I agree that standards based grading would be a good move to show student learning and progress. I also agree with Trisha that there is a potential for parents and students to correlate 1,2,3,4 with the traditional letter grades.
