The mentee usually feels lost and worried and listening to his/her problems can help to make him/her more comfortable and trusting.
Some years ago, we had a new English conversation assistant in the school. We met at the teachers room, where the coffee machine was and I noticed he was a little bit blue. I asked what was going on and he confessed that he was feeling very lonely so far away from his family. After that conversation, I greeted him everyday and tried to make him more comfortable. He always thanked me for listening him those tough first days.

Geta, Romania Trust is the central point of building the mentoring relationship. As long as your mentee is finding support in you and being open to sharing its success and failures means that you are doing your job as a mentor. It is very important that the door of your class is always open and you are always an example to him.

I'd like to share my thoughts on the strategy 'Being available to listen (both mentally and in real time)' from the 'Listening, Listening, Listening' section. The importance of listening in real time is clear, as for listening mentally, I believe it means returning to the conversation and thoughts the mentee shared with the mentor and reflecting on them in your thoughts, right? If yes, it is crucial, because not all solutions/ ideas come at once. So, returning to the issues that are urgent for the mentee once again later on seems a great strategy to me.

EVA,SPAINOnce I had a group who wasn´t really involved in learning English and who were more worried for having a good time during the lessons .I was indeed worried for them , because if they failed three subjects they couldn´t go on with their studies. So, I was more conscious than them _ as it always happens-about their future .So, I told my mentee the problem .I showed her I was vulnerable and we were sharing a common challenge _ making our students conscious of the importance of English in their lives. It is often overlooked, or a quick tour is given before the start of a school year when there are so many new things to take in that it can overwhelming – especially in larger schools. I’ve worked in a number of schools during my teaching career and I have to say I was never taken on a tour and think it would have been hugely beneficial. I think it allows for the mentee to become familiar with the surroundings. Practical things are important in helping the mentee to settle in to the school…things like knowing where the staffroom is, knowing where the staff toilets are, knowing where the principal’s office and secretary’s office are, knowing how to use the photocopier, knowing where the equipment for maths, P.E. or Science is kept are vital for the new teacher to feel comfortable in the school surroundings.

I’m not saying I don’t like chatting, but I believe I’m a good listener also because I don’t usually ask many questions or judge people who trust me. In what concerns my job, I can say that I had model mentors and they managed to develop a climate of trust from day 1 by always asking thought-provoking questions and being available to listen mentally and in real time, at school or even at home. With time, they got to know me, my vulnerabilities and anxieties, and clearly there was a relational trust that survived till my mentors’ deaths.

Also other titles of Ontario's ideas are important: listening skill is fundamental for each positive relationship; so same mentoring must develop this action as the sharing "real world" challenges: in one world we must be available to share, to open, to know my and his/her level of development, in a continuous exchange of experiences.
Then all mentoring situations must be live with creativity and despite time (available of mentor and mentee for possible leasure time to spend together...) and space (in school- coffe space or other spaces, or out the school, but pay attention to shipping time...).
Last reflection: in Italy is very difficult giving time, because time table of job teacher is more stiff; furthermore spaces school are not usually for free time (or coffe break) meetings!

“Recognizing the power of silence and the importance of simply listening”. This is a strategy that I often adopt in the relationship with a mentee. When the mentee has an idea, a real personal idea that is worth trying, I simply listen to he/she without commenting in detail. Of course I adopt this strategy when the idea has chances of success and is well founded in the daily routine of our school. I know that the mentee expect comments, advice and assurances, but I think that in some cases it’s better not influenced he/she with my ideas and simply encourage him/her. The risk is that the mentee might be disappointed, so one has to be kind and find the right words.

I met my new colleague sitting somewhat embarrassed and alone on a bench near the school entrance. I tended to welcomed him warmly. Then we introduced each other and referred to our specialty, origin, residence as well as work experience. I suggested, as a mentor, to guide him throughout the school, indoors and outdoors. During the tour, I made sure to tell him about the history of the school, how the workshops, the library, the event hall, and the sports facilities operate. I showed him the teachers' office and the toilets. Throughout the discussion, I told him, in particular, the positives of the school, and also mentioned some points where improvements could be made. After that, I proposed him to have a cup of coffee or tea.

I truly believe I can learn from her as she can learn from me, it shows and she knows. That would be if I am not wrong, mutual respect. I often ask her if she remembers or knows how they do it in Germany, for example my last question was about duties. In Spain, if a teacher does not come to school, the teachers in duty will cover that class, never mind the subject. She told me in Germany, at least in her area, teachers of the same subject do the cover. I am indeed receptive to her feedback on the different issues we talk about .

We have been together for a month and we still have a lot of time left so I know I will be listening to what she has to say , and that brings me to the

Listening, Listening, Listening strategy

I will be listening to learn.

I consider all the strategies referred in the website essential to developing a climate of trust, but “Listening, Listening, Listening” is the most important because a mentor must be a good listener, he must be available to listen. Beginning teachers require sharing their doubts or questions, and for them our view is very important. No matter how small or insignificant you may think their questions are, you must try to put yourself in their shoes and try to remember how it was when you were beginning. “Recognizing the power of silence and the importance of simply listening”. This is a strategy that I frequently adopt in life in general and in the relationship with my mentee, in particular. When the mentee has an idea for a project, I just listen and encourage him without remarking. Sometimes the ideas are of difficult performance but I always try to have something nice to say, because there is no such a thing as bad ideas, just difficult ideas to accomplish. Mentees are always expecting observations and advices.

Modelling a genuine interest in learning togetherAs a coordinator, I followed a workshop project in which I had to build a common vision on a project with just-known colleagues. Time was short but supported by a common interest in the project, a vision of shared roles, mutual curiosity, we were able to develop activities that made us all feel happy to be part of a team. At the base there was mutual respect and interest. Without this casual assumption, the time to reach our goal would not have been respected and the whole project would have suffered.

Providing an "oasis of calm": I'm always busy, a thousand ideas and a thousand problems to solve. Providing "an oasis of calm" is complicated for me because I can't find it inside me. What I can provide instead is "an oasis of positive energy".Focusing on each other's strengths. When I meet new colleagues I try to understand what they have to offer to the school community. This type of meeting is not easy, but when it happens it is love at first sight. Acknowledging the "messiness" of learning. I don't understand why what is the strongest and most creative element of learning is called "confusion". Listening to learn as opposed to listening to speak. Over time I became better at listening, I learned not to be intrusive. I always have an answer for everything. Today, after so much experience, victories and failures, I can also listen, but not always understand.

Constantinos Selevistas, Greece. SMALL STEPS WITH A NEW COLLEAGUE (Building Inclusion): A new teacher of special needs arrives at school and tries to orientate herself. I welcome her, I introduce myself and I mention the courses that I am teaching. I introduce her to other colleagues and especially those with whom she shares common courses (Helping build connections with community and colleagues). I ask her some basic questions so to break the ice: has she worked in a school before, does she live far away from school so it takes her a lot of time to come, what is her field of specialization? (Learning about personal interests)I provide her with information about my students with special needs, I make it easier for her to να get in touch with them (Helping build connections). I have in mind to ask her opinion about some of my students with whom I’m having hard times (Identifying a third point as a focus for collaboration). A day during which she is at the courtyard I accompany her and discuss with her on general matters ((Learning about personal interests - Touring the school together).

Choose one of the example strategies identified in the TeachOntario website mentioned above and share an example of implementing that strategy in the Padlet below. For example, if you choose the “Celebrating successes together” strategy, you might share a story of how you shared a piece of cake with your mentee in celebration of mastering a specific challenge of the mentee. In other words, outline a situation where you have implemented the strategy or how you could implement it. Make sure to always indicate which of the strategies identified in the website you are referring to. And of course feel free to comment on each other’s ideas (in a constructive and positive manner).

This gives me the chance to see his/her perspective and focus on issues s/he feels uncertain. Making mistakes is sth we all do, its’ part of us becoming better teachers. Sharing such stories is very comforting with teachers who are frustrated !!

All the Ideas from Across Ontario for Building Relational Trust are very useful for building stable and deep relationships. I would choose "Modelling Mutual Respect" and especially the technique "Walking in the person's shoes". Through a successful cooperation between the mentor and the mentee, the mentee must feel that the mentor understands him/her, as the mentor should use words showing that he/she has already lived these situations before and reveal him/her what he/she had done in the same situation. If you show to your mentee that you have walked in his/her shoes, the relationship becomes stronger and the trust becomes bigger.

I agree with what Vanda Madeira wrote.
Being able to Listen is fundamental for a mentor. Usually we let the mentee listen to us , without being able to express himself and share his/her doubts, ideas... So, we must listen more.
