The Roman government was a republic with three branches. The 300 person senate had the most power, and members served for life. Their laws were written on the Twelve Tables, which were carved in stone and publicly displayed. The Roman legal system greatly influenced the U.S. government today.

Julius Caesar changed Rome from a republic to an empire, Augustus Caesar ruled at the start of the Pax Romana, and Marcus Aurelius was a philosophical emperor whose death marked the end of the Pax Romana.

Rome was a very powerful empire with many lasting achievements. At its height, Rome was able to conquer the area from northern Europe all the way down to Carthage and Egypt, and spreading East towards Asia Minor. They build hundreds of roads connecting all the territories they conquered, used for transporting military and goods. Many of those roads still stand today. Rome also made many medical advances, and built the Colosseum, one of the most well known arenas in the world.

Rome had a very unique culture. There was a large emphasis on art, which can be seen in the mosaics, frescoes, and elaborate sculptures that decorated their cities. Their literature and polytheistic religion was modeled after the Greeks', but was altered to be uniquely Roman. Later on, they switched to Christianity, which was a very influential and lasting religion. In addition, Latin was the foundation for most romance languages that are still spoken today.

Rome had a lot of good farmland, and grew crops such as grapes, olives, and grains. They had an advanced irrigation system to water their crops. Rome traded with many surrounding territories for goods they didn't have access to, and spread their culture and ideas to these places along the way. Plebeians and slaves did most of the work growing and trading goods.

Much of Roman culture can still be seen today. Their architecture has influenced the design of many modern cities, and their primary religion, Christianity, is still one of the most popular religions in the world. Although English isn't a romance language, it draws many roots from Latin. The U.S.'s government is very similar to Rome's as well.

The Roman military was extremely powerful, and consisted of many legions. The legions were made of 5,000 men each, mostly voluntary citizens, and were nearly undefeatable. As Rome began to fall, the legions lost power, and the military began to have to hire foreign mercenaries to fight for them. However, these legions are still a force to be remembered.
