This video is our venue recording of "somebody told me". The main challenge of this song was the start of the song with the introductury bass solo. The way i did it was played the intro with my fingers and the rest of the song with a pick which was the reccomended play style. I am glad it was reccomended i use a pick as i dont usually use one due to personal preference. This song has led me to include more pick driven exercises into my practice routine. The theme of the week was open mic night , which due this songs mainstream british appeal i think it worked perfectly.

During our bass techniques lesson we discussed the introductions too funk , with influences such as james brown as seen in the video. Too challenge myself i learnt the song and played along to it , specifically working on my palm muting while using a pick. It was nice too look at the origins of the genre and how it has changed over time.

To me "my sound" provides an oppourtunity for me to explore what makes me enjoy the music i play and make. I especially would like to explore different genres doing things i would never consider doing. One of my goals for my final project is too write and produce my own song with lyrics included with potential vocals from me and my bandmates . I believe i am in a transitional prtiod in my career as i am finally engaging in original music. Within level 4 i stuck too covers for my projects and i aim too change that with my live and DAW tracks being originals.

This was our first bass lesson of the term focusing on stylistic development. The theme of the week was "funk" with us looking at artists such as bootsy collins and the simple repetitive rhythms , with this being explored further with "tower of power". Another thing we looked at was developing a new practice schedule which i have implemented into my week starting with learning the james brown songs and picking exercises which are not my strongest suit at all.

During the rehearsals of this song with the band i did not get the bridge correct which was a personal failure in my eyes as i spent quite a long time working on this song and wanted to do it well as a bass player this is one of those songs which i can really show my skills off and freely express myself. I went home and recorded myself playing the bridge as proof of my own hardwork and the fact i did it. This weeks theme being around auditions was a suitable theme in my opinion for if i played the way i did i would not have been selected and that is a harsh reality of the music business but one that we all have to understand.

As of publishing this post no videos from our performances have been made available yet.

The theme for this week was acoustic live lounge with the song being a pop punk style of song and needing it to sound quieter and more suitable for an acoustic audience.

During the rehearsals for this song we did not have access to a drummer so i had to use the kit while marshall played my bass. The idea on my end was too keep it simple and lowkey with clicks on the rim and a steady click on the ride. Our group turned it into a jazz esc performance.

In this small snippet from my logic project you can see how i have started to add basics to the track developing the intro too sound more full. For the guitar i used a wah effect pedal while turning the tone all the way up to create the specific tone i wanted for the melody at the beginning. This intro was inspired somewhat by "Ain't talkin bout love" by Van Halen which is one of my favorite songs by them and of all time.

The drums in the track have not been worked on that much as at this point of time i just wanted something in there to provide depth while i work on the musicality.

While playing the parts into logic i played against a click which i find helps me massively and is a good skill to have.

Murder on the dance floor

The bassline for this song was written within 20 minutes of a studio session and the original radio edit was not going to have bass until guy pratt added it , making the groovy disco bassline we now know. The bassline itself is quite repetitive which is not a bad thing at all , bouncing between the G and F for the chorus with the octaves playing a large role in the bassline as many disco basslines do. During this chorus , Guy Pratt adds his signature "rake" where you drag your index finger down the strix in preparation for the next downwards octave. The move itself is not for show however with it becoming extremely useful to the tonality of the bassline. Overall the song itself was fun to play and did help demonstrate the theme for the week , that being a festival with this song going viral in early 2023 and being a fun and enjoyable song to play and listen too in general. The transition into that chorus was shaky for our group however but we spend a considerable amount of time trying to get it right.

BLACK HOLE SUN

This weeks song for LPW was "Black hole sun" by soundgarden. The song provides some challenges the for the groups , one minor one i am picking on is the tuning , with the original being in drop D but pitch shifted sharp by about 2/3s in the recording process , my guess would be digitally. The bassline itself was not entirely difficult itself with open notes dragging out across the bars , the bass obviously is not supposed to be overbearing so this works within the vision of the song. Timing was an issue with many of the guitarists within the groups struggling to keep tempo especially within the introduction. With access to a pad for example the texture of the song could have been greatly improved with the original having the background slides adding to the aesthetic of the song.

The rehearsal process for this song was tedious but it suits the theme of a live studio recording to it has to be pinpoint correct. Overall the song is a classic psychedelic rock song and one of my favourites so it was enjoyable to play while also not being to technically demanding.

Formative feedback for "MY SOUND"

This week i received feedback for my projects , and i would like to focus on the my sound module to start. The feedback was mostly positive but i agree with aidens comments of my song not exactly sounding within my vision yet and sounding more "green day" esc. After some reflection i have decided to embrace this feedback leaning more into that , taking inspiration from "Dookie" released the 1st of February 1994. Specifically i would like to focus on "Welcome to paradise" with its bass centric sound and breakdown being an inspiration for a new track. With regards to the old one i can store it for later , and take features i may like and incorporate them into this new track.

The goals for this new track are as follows

Bass centered feel

aggressive guitar tone

drums being clear and precise

high tempo

picking technique on the bass

it may be a very vague list but its something to work with as a i develop the track and work to move forward.

Following on from my formative feedback i have started work developing my song for my project. I believe the inspiration is clear so far , if only a bassline , with the tonality especially . The bass line is in the key of A with a Bb at the end to give it a Mixolydian feel. My next aim for the track is to brainstorm lyrics to consult my singer with and develop a part for my guitarist who has agreed to help me on the track.

The bass is half a step down taking inspiration from "Dookie".

Identify what you intended to achieve and what milestones or targets you aimed to reach.

Where are you at in relation to these targets? What has surprised you about your experience so far?

At the beginning i was unsure what to expect as i had been in a music college yes but not at a high enough level . I knew university would be a big step up from college and i was moving away from home which threw a curveball my way.

Evaluate the progress you have made so far. Identify the specific achievements and milestones you have reached in relation to your initial goals.

Analyse how have you improved your technical skills, project management skills and general understanding.

The bass lessons have blown my mind and broadened my horizons so much when it comes to everything , from musicians to styles to instruments , everything has been expanded and i now find myself seeking more knowledge.

EVALUATE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

My playing ability has drastically improved within itself for a start.

This video is our first run through of my live performance for my assessment. I chose this song as its simplicity allows for adjustments or additions to the baseline. The song itself is not difficult and i know it might set me back slightly but i have to consider the amount of time that others have to give me. With more time the song will develop and perhaps a second guitarist to add layers to the song.

The pedalboard has a wide range of options with a reverb, octave , mute, distortion and chorus which were used on tracks such as murder on the dancefloor and live with pink floyd.

In the chorus i used the octave to lower the bass and make it punchy and stand out . During the ending verses i used the chorus and reverb too make the ending mini bass solo come through the sound mix.

This has inspired me to sing on my own track and altering the song to suit my own vocal voice.

I am not the best writer of lyrics but for my original song i wanted to write them myself. The main theme behind the lyrics are the first meeting behind my girlfriend at a new years party where we got together. With a personal connection behind this i might find it easier to write lyrics.

An aesthetic within music is absolutely necessary in my opinion especially with regards to genre specific music. For example , someone doing country music dressing in giant parachute trousers and a backwards hat would not work and the audience would not be convinced of the artists authenticity.

Especially when it comes to live performances , the look of the artist is what helps sell the show . One recent example i can give is Sabrina carpenter and her recent tour . Her music is very much catered towards a feminine audience and she dresses in bright sparkly dresses which fit her vibe of music.

In my opinion , a case study is a detailed and thorough look into a specific aspect of an artist's life or music. A case study would use trusted sources and citations credited at the bottom. They are included in an assessment to provide students with an insight within the industry and a real music example.
