Page 60: "You're right, our families were very close," Mrs. Liu murmured. She looked up at me and after a moment she sighed. "I want to tell you that our decision about breaking your engagement was a very hard one. We agonized over it for many months. I am truly sorry, Ailin." I love this quote because it makes me wonder if Mrs. Liu broke her engagement alone and why she would apologize to Ailin. It also shows me that Mrs. Liu wasn't happy with the decision but shes really connected to tradition and wanted Ailin to bind her feet.

Page 67: "But I thought it's to please the MEN that women's feet are bound!" I think that this quote shows the gender inequality of China, 1911, and it makes me wonder why kids are being taught such things? Edit: I also think that if kids are the future of a country they will one day inherit, why are they being told these sort of things? To lead a country that was functioning badly like it was before? Why do closed minded people, such as Big Uncle believe that the country is functioning badly when it comes to the government, but they want to keep the ways that make it function badly? Why are they so tied to tradition that they will keep old ways that they are complaining about? - Jules.

This shows how excluded women were, how they had to keep quiet and weren't even allowed to talk during conversations at dinner.

We understand from Ailin's perspective that Big Uncle possesses an Ancient Mindset, one which implies that men should be the only ones to participate in discussions and that young women shouldn't attend school.

This quote really makes the reader realize how little women were valued, since women usually speak up during conversations. The author is giving the reader a strong example to enforce the reader's understanding at the lengths to which the discrimination went to.

Lensey Namioka is describing marvellous feelings, that any young woman or man should have the right to feel and that we are all going to feel, and showing us how that special moment is being strapped away from Ailin due to the ancient Chinese ways.
Ms.Namioka's touching description of a moment that will be planted in every person's memory for ever touches all readers, young or old, and makes them emphathize with Ailin.
In this quote, we learn more about the theme of gender inequality in the book, since young women, if not coming from families who had an open and modern mindset, were not able to attend school, recieve an education, and experience such wonderful moments in their lives.

The first sentence of Chapter Seven says, "Big Unclde made his move on an evening in late summer, when the first cool breezes began to blow through the courtyards."
This quote's word choice tells me two things.
The first, with the use of "Big Uncle made his move", shows us that Ailin doesn't have any loving feelings towards Big Uncle, and that she considers him an enemy. Making "his move" indicates that Ailin has to beat him in a game. Is this game Ailin's future and life?
The second thing refers to the mention of a cool breeze coming in during the last days of summer. I believe that this has more to it than just telling us the climate. The summer is the period of prosperity, plants grow in the sun there, and although you have to work hard to water the plants, they surely will thrive in the summer. The winter, instead, is a time where crops do not grow due to the cold, and it's full of sickness. I am reminding you this because I believe the seasons here symbolize that the time of prosperity, education, learning and happiness for Ailin is ending, and a new time of hard work, harshness and challenges is about to begin. The cold breeze coming in symbolizes that it is all just getting started. In addition, when everyone stops to laugh because of Big Uncle, it also indicates Ailin's period of happiness is about to end due to him.
This is warning us that a big change is about to come up for Ailin. It is excpected, since everyone knows that when the sun leaves, the summer is bound to end.

For one, the author's choice of words, so harsh and cruel, has an impact on the reader and makes them realize that people in Ancient China would kill children if they didn't behave the way men wanted them to.
In addition, we see gender discrimination. Big Uncle claims that the only ereason Ailin is alive is because of her father. Well, Father happens to be a male, and Ailin happens to be a female. I do not believe that if a male child, like Little Brother, had behaved the same way as Ailin, Big Uncle would have said the same things.

2. Chapter Eight
The last paragraph (2 sentences) of Chapter Eight is, "For the first time I understood the price I was paying for my rebellion. I had been exiled from my own people, and I had entered a world that despised what I had been taught to value."
The differences between the outside world are seen throughout this quote. Ailin is facing a lot of struggles to find a place in society, and this adds to that theme. Right now, Ailin is in a situation where she can't go back home, but she doesn't feel at home in this new habitat either. We have arrived in a point in the story where Ailin is seeking the place where she belongs.
Moreover, the author is using words such as "despised" or "exiled" to enforce the gravity of the situation. This impacts the reader, because it makes them understand that this is no easy situation that Ailin is in.

Without father, Ailin only had few options for her future from Big Uncle. Becoming a nun, a farmer's wife, and other options. For men, they could become whatever they liked, but for women, it could only be those options if the woman didn't marry or bind her feet. Ailin had multiple inner conflicts because of these options that Big Uncle gave her. For example, she would refuse to do any of those three options. But, she also had to do one of those. So, her mind was really confused. She also had exterior conflicts. Like the conflicts with Big Uncle about becoming an Amah for a family. Big Uncle didn't accept this outcome until the day that Ailin left the house (Page 90).

At first when Ailin came to her new school I thought she would be the main thinker in her school and tell other girls about how she will not get her feet bound and will not marry not the one who is told. I think the author did that to show that in the story not only Ailin didn't want to go through all of this but other girls too. Rafa

What will be the received reaction if her family heard what the Warner's were calling her?

At the beginning of chapter six, I noticed that the only thing that was in Ailin's mind was her father's sickness. She knew he was dying and she loved him a lot, and she also had just been accepted on a public school and now that her father is dying Ailin knows Big Uncle will make her quit school when he's on control of the family. I think this quote is very sad because of how Ailin cares about her father and Ailin loves him and knowing that he'll die soon must feel very bad, also knowing that your worst enemy from the family will be in charge.

Also on page 73, "You'd better come into my room and sit with me for a while. It's not safe for you when he's like that." - Big Uncles first wife. What I think of these quotes is that they are a perfect example of Gender treatment in China 1911. The BAD men (It is very important that we do not discriminate against all males for something only some did, that is why we should say bad men instead of men) would think, and actually have, so much power, and some women (Like Big Uncles first wife) felt meek under the bad men's treatment towards them.

Or else, it's just the teacher speaking about the topic. With opinions from students, the classes evolve in an unthinkable way. This may happen because, if it's something religious, very serious, or controversial, many opinions can really help. For example, I'm sure that I don't have the same opinions from my classmates. But I'm open to listen to their opinions. Later on in the chapter, they say that she could have gotten expelled for that. This definitely made inner conflict for Xueyan either she should continue to show her opinions to the world, or keep them to herself and keep safe.

But it was getting harder to ignore the telltale signs of father’s lung disease: the fits of coughing, which ended with blood on his handkerchiefs.’’
This quote makes me think about how sad Ailin felt when she knew her dad would die. She lost many people already... she would lose her dad too.

Big uncle said, "No men would tolerate being interrupted by an impertinent slip of a girl".
This quote is really sad. it shows how girls were much less respected and men always were right at that time. Things got much better but the world is still really sexist.

Page 125 Chapter 10 "I learned that his name was James Chew and that he was born in San Francisco where his father owned a restaurant." Page 124 Chapter 10 - "The sound of a soft laugh made me turn around. A CHINESE man got off the couch" I wonder which country James feels more connected to. She refers to him as a CHINESE man but later learns he was born in SAN FRANCISCO. So does he look more Chinese? Which language does he feel more comfortable speaking? Cantonese (A Language form a Chinese city) Or English? (The known FOREIGNER language.) Is he dressed in western clothes like Ailin? Is he in Chinese silk? Which does he prefer? Is all his family classed as "American" or "Chinese" or are they a group of Third Culture People? (I would have said Kids but their parents are included.)

'Your uncle told me he was afraid you might wind up in some hole aboard the ship. He wanted to make sure that you'd have accomodations suitable for a daughter of the Tao family. "
-
That quote really touched me. It showed that maybe Big Uncle actually cared about Ailin after all of those years.
