One purpose for GIFs which is commonly seen on websites is to provide a visual instruction for the user. Websites which are used to educate and inform can use GIFs as a way of displaying a live instruction on how to do something. GIFs are ideal for this use as they provide a moving image, making instructions clearer, and they also loop meaning that no user interaction is required, making them more convenient.

Another popular use for GIFs is for advertisement.
