Our usrah’s 3rd meeting took place online on September 13th via Zoom. Here’s a fun and informative summary of our session. Enjoy!

We kicked off the usrah with a spirited recitation of Al-Kahfi. Despite the hustle and bustle of Friday, it brought a sense of calm and allowed us, or at least me, to savor the beautiful sounds of the Al-Quran.

Our discussion centered around the concept of Tawhid (Arabic: تَوْحِيد‎, romanized: tawḥīd, lit. ‘oneness [of God]’), which is the essence of monotheism in Islam. We delved into the three types of Tawhid:

1. Rububiyyah (Lordship): This means acknowledging that Allah SWT is the creator of all things and affirming His uniqueness in His actions.

2. Uluhiyyah (Worship): This involves worshipping Allah alone, dedicating all acts of worship, both inward and outward, in word and deed, solely to Allah, and not worshipping anyone or anything else.

3. Asma wa Sifat (Names and Attributes): These are the names and attributes of Allah, which are endless but summarized in the 99 Asma ul Husna in the Qur’an.

Next, we explored why Allah created angels. Allah is ‘Al-Malik’ (The King). Although He has no weaknesses and doesn’t need help, He created angels to carry out His commands. This reminds us of Allah’s boundless power. Angels have various roles, including guiding, protecting, recording deeds, and conveying messages from Allah to humans.

We also learned from Dr. Omar Suleiman’s ‘Angels in Your Presence’ that when a person commits a sin, the angel on their left shoulder is instructed to delay writing it in the book of deeds for six hours. This grace period allows the person to repent. However, we should not wait to repent; we should do so immediately! Additionally, we have guardian angels in front and behind us, protecting us from harm by Allah’s command. These angels remain with us until death, when they return our souls to Allah.

At the end of our usrah, we learned about the history of idol worship (berhala) during the time of Prophet Noah. It was fascinating and new to all of us.

Overall, today’s discussion was both informative and engaging. I can’t wait for our next usrah session.

In this usrah session held on 20th september, we learned ABOUT "BERIMAN KEPADA NABI"

Believing in the Prophet, or Nabi, is a fundamental aspect of Islamic faith. The term “Nabi” refers to a prophet chosen by Allah to guide humanity. This usrah session explores the significance of this belief and its implications for Muslims.

The Role of a Nabi

A Nabi is not only a messenger but also a role model for ethical and moral conduct. They are sent to remind people of their duties towards Allah and each other. Their lives are filled with lessons that remain relevant today.

Belief in Allah’s Oneness

In Surah Al-Baqarah, there is a verse where Prophet Muhammad (SAW) affirms his belief in the oneness of Allah. As Muslims, it is our duty to uphold this belief and live by it.

Daily Practices

Muslims are encouraged to practice the Al-Mathurat every morning and evening. Additionally, it is essential to follow all of Allah’s commands diligently.

Why Believe in the Nabi?

Believing in the Nabi is crucial because they serve as guides for Muslims and all people on earth. On the Day of Judgment (Kiamat), the Nabi will intercede (Syafaat) on behalf of believers.

What is Syafaat?

Syafaat acts as a shield, protecting Muslims from the burning heat of the sun on the Day of Judgment. Various sources of Syafaat include:

• The Quran

• The Nabi

• Those who memorize and recite the Quran (Hafiz, Hafizah)

• Martyrs (Mati Syahid)

Seven Groups That Will Receive Syafaat

1. Just leaders

2. Those who do ibadah wholeheartedly

3. Those whose hearts are attached to the mosque

4. Two people who meet and part for the sake of Allah

5. Those who resist the temptation of women

6. Those who cry when they remember Allah

7. Those who sincerely give charity

Conclusion

As Muslims, we can admire and follow the Nabi without crossing boundaries. This means respecting their teachings and embodying their virtues in our daily lives.

Rasul vs. Nabi

• Rasul: A prophet who spreads divine revelations to all people.

• Nabi: A prophet who receives revelations for themselves.

This usrah session has taught us so many beautiful things about Islam and how we as muslims should always believe in the greatness of Allah. I look forward for the next session usrah!

IHSAN - can be exampled from the tales of NABI Ibrahim, NABI Nuh and NABI Yusuf where they practice IHSAN even when they have their own hardships, still they believe in Allah.

We should take these tales as examples for us muslims to live a better life and make sure that we practice IHSAN in our life even if it is just helping a blind man cross the road!

The usrah session was fun and I've learned about all kind of new things!

This is our 6th usrah meeting and our second last session for this semester! It was held on 4th October 2024 at LRB4 in Jurjani Building.

In this session we discussed about ADAB & AKHLAK .

WHAT IS ADAB and AKHLAK?

ADAB refers to MANNERS while AKHLAK refers to MORALITY.

Adab (manners) and akhlak (morality) are fundamental aspects of our lives, especially in how we treat our parents.

Be Humble: Humility is the cornerstone of good manners. When interacting with your parents, always approach them with respect and humility. Recognize their sacrifices and wisdom, and never let pride or arrogance cloud your relationship with them.

Keep on Making Dua: Praying for your parents is a powerful way to show your love and gratitude. Make dua for their health, happiness, and guidance while they are alive. Even after they have passed away, continue to pray for their forgiveness and peace in the hereafter. This act of continuous dua strengthens your bond with them and brings blessings into your life.

Always Visit Your Parents: Regularly visiting your parents is a tangible expression of your love and respect. Spend quality time with them, listen to their stories, and seek their advice. If they have passed away, visit their graves, make dua for them, and remember their teachings.

From these points, we can learn the importance of maintaining strong, respectful, and loving relationships with your parents and how that reflects us as a human being and a muslim.

This usrah session was an eye opener for all of us to practice good adad with our parents and also with others. I look forward to our last usrah session!

In this session we got to know and befriend fellow usrah members. It was so much fun! We got to know each other's unique talents and everyone was very cooperative! We also suggested some activities to be held during our usrah sessions in the future!

What is NIAT, AMAL & IHSAN?

• Niat is the purpose in every action. We should be sincere in worshipping and submitting Allah SWT

• 'Amal is the actions done. Good' amal is the mirror to our Iman. there is 'Amal soleh which is done for Allah and bad 'Amal which is done by our own greed and desire.

• Ihsan is the perfection and sincerety of one' s Niat and 'Amal. We do something with the fear that Allah is watching us (taqwa). Good Ihsan reflects good Iman. Be good to all living beings and non-living beings.

• Niat ->' Amal -> Ihsan

Conclusion:

I learn so many things from this first usrah session and had a great time with my fellow usrah members. I hope thay everyone knows how Usrah is important to us as, muslims.

For the next usrah session, I hope we can learn more valuable informations in Islam.

1. Obligatory Ibadah: These are the acts of worship that Allah has made compulsory, such as performing the five daily prayers (Salah), fasting during the month of Ramadan (Sawm), paying Zakat, and performing Hajj for those who are able.

2. General Ibadah: These are everyday actions done with the intention of pleasing Allah, such as speaking kindly, helping others, seeking knowledge, and showing gratitude for His blessings.

Why Were We Created?

We reflected on the purpose of our creation. Allah says in the Quran:
"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." (Surah Adh-Dhariyat: 56)

This reminds us that our primary purpose in life is to recognize Allah, submit to Him, and worship Him in all aspects of our lives. Worship is not just limited to rituals; it encompasses every act done with sincerity for Allah.

Exploring the Key Forms of Ibadah

We discussed the meaning, ways, and benefits of specific acts of worship:

1. Praying (Salah)

   • Meaning: Salah is a direct connection between a servant and Allah, performed five times daily as an obligation. It reminds us of Allah's presence in our lives.

   • Ways: Maintaining proper concentration, praying on time, and perfecting the movements and recitations are key aspects of Salah.

   • Benefits: Salah instills discipline, strengthens faith, and serves as a form of spiritual cleansing. It brings peace and helps us seek guidance from Allah.

2. Fasting (Sawm)

   • Meaning: Fasting, particularly during Ramadan, involves abstaining from food, drink, and sinful behavior from dawn to sunset.

   • Ways: Fasting is not only about hunger but also controlling our desires, avoiding bad habits, and engaging in good deeds.

   • Benefits: It teaches self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and gratitude for Allah's blessings. It also purifies the soul and draws us closer to Allah.

3. Zakat (Charity)

   • Meaning: Zakat is a mandatory annual payment given to the needy, calculated as a portion of one’s wealth.

   • Ways: It must be given with sincerity, ensuring it reaches the rightful recipients such as the poor, orphans, and others in need.

   • Benefits: Zakat purifies our wealth, reduces greed, and promotes social harmony by bridging the gap between the rich and the poor.

4. Hajj (Pilgrimage)

   • Meaning: Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey to Makkah. It symbolizes submission to Allah.

   • Ways: Pilgrims perform rituals such as Tawaf (circling the Kaaba), Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah), and standing at Arafah. These acts commemorate the faith of Prophet Ibrahim and his family.

   • Benefits: Hajj unites Muslims from diverse backgrounds, reminding them of equality and the Day of Judgment. It also purifies the heart and renews one's faith.

General Benefits of Ibadah

Ibadah is not just about fulfilling obligations but also about building a relationship with Allah, purifying the soul, and finding peace. It gives life meaning, helps us navigate challenges, and strengthens our character.

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197)

Allah emphasizes the importance of Hajj:
"Hajj is (during) well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein (by entering the state of Ihram), there is (to be for him) no sexual relations, no disobedience, and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do - Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. And fear Me, O you of understanding."

This verse highlights the spiritual significance of Hajj, the need for good conduct during the pilgrimage, and the importance of Taqwa (God-consciousness).

Reflection on Allah’s Power

We also reflected on Allah’s greatness. Even if all 8 billion people on Earth refused to worship Him, His power would remain unchanged. Worship is for our benefit, not His. Through Ibadah, we gain spiritual nourishment, guidance, and success in this life and the Hereafter.

Preparation for Salah with Khusyu'

Salah is the first act of worship Allah will judge on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The first thing a person will be judged on is salah. If it is good, the rest of their deeds will be good. If it is bad, the rest will be bad” (Sunan al-Nasa’i 3996). This shows the importance of perfecting salah, as it reflects the state of all our deeds.

To ensure our salah is accepted, we must prepare and perform it with khusyu’—humility, focus, and devotion.

Key Preparations for Salah

1. Taharah (Cleanliness)
   The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “No prayer is accepted without purification” (Muslim 292). We must perform wudu’ (ablution) properly, as cleanliness is essential for salah.

2. Clothing
   The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed, “Wear your clean clothes for every prayer” (Al-Bukhari 337). Dressing modestly and appropriately reflects respect for Allah.

3. The Place of Prayer
   Pray in a clean, distraction-free space, as a pure environment helps maintain focus and khusyu'.

What is Khusyu’?

Khusyu’ is a state of humility, focus, and presence of heart during salah. It means praying as if you see Allah, knowing He sees you.

Why Khusyu’?

Salah with khusyu' strengthens our connection with Allah and ensures our prayers are meaningful. Without khusyu’, salah becomes routine and lacks spiritual benefit.

How to Attain Khusyu’?

• Prepare mentally before salah by remembering Allah.

• Understand the meanings of what you recite.

• Avoid distractions by praying in a quiet place.

• Reflect on the temporary nature of this world.

Story of ‘Amir bin Abdullah

‘Amir bin Abdullah was known for his deep khusyu’ in salah. Once, while praying, he was stung by a scorpion, but he didn’t interrupt his prayer. When asked, he said, “I was focusing on my connection with Allah, and I didn’t want to let anything distract me.”

This level of devotion reminds us to strive for sincerity and presence of heart in our own prayers.

“Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.” (Surah Taha, 20:14)

How to Attain Khusyu’?

1. Remember Death
   Reflecting on death reminds us of our accountability before Allah, making us more sincere and focused in salah.

2. Pray Without Haste
   Perform each movement calmly and give every part of the prayer its due time. Rushing through salah diminishes khusyu’.

3. Understand the Meaning of Recitations
   Knowing the meanings of the verses and surahs we recite helps us engage our hearts and minds during salah. This understanding deepens our connection to Allah.

Why is Khusyu’ Important?

No matter who we are—rich or poor, influential or humble—salah levels everyone. It allows us to set aside worldly distractions and stand humbly before Allah. Salah with khusyu’ trains us to detach from worldly concerns and focus on the Hereafter.

Sunnah: Preparing for Khusyu’

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of wudu’ (ablution) as part of preparation for salah. According to a hadith narrated by Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet said, “Whoever performs wudu’ perfectly, his sins will leave his body, even from beneath his nails.” (Muslim)
Wudu’ cleanses both the body and the soul, setting the stage for a prayer filled with khusyu’.

What Are the Virtues of Salah with Khusyu’?

1. Taat (Obedience to Allah)
   Salah with khusyu’ is an act of complete submission and obedience to Allah’s command. It demonstrates our devotion and willingness to fulfill His rights over us.

2. Jihad (Struggle Against the Self)
   Attaining khusyu’ requires effort to overcome distractions, laziness, and worldly attachments. This internal struggle is a form of jihad, as it trains us to prioritize Allah over everything else.

3. Tawaddu (Humility)
   Khusyu’ fosters humility by reminding us of our dependence on Allah. In salah, we bow and prostrate, physically expressing our acknowledgment of His greatness and our smallness.

4. Muhasabah (Self-Reflection)
   Salah with khusyu’ encourages self-reflection. As we stand before Allah, we are reminded of our actions, sins, and the need to repent and improve.

5. Modesty (Iffah)
   Salah teaches modesty in both physical appearance and behavior. It instills a sense of moral integrity, reminding us to conduct ourselves with dignity and righteousness in daily life.

Conclusion

Salah with khusyu’ is not just an obligation; it is a gift from Allah that brings countless virtues. It purifies our hearts, strengthens our connection with Allah, and molds us into better individuals. By striving for khusyu’, we transform salah into a source of peace, guidance, and success in this life and the Hereafter.

Fasting (puasa) is an act of worship that goes beyond just avoiding food and drink. It is a way to strengthen faith, train self-discipline, and purify the soul.

What is Fasting?

Fasting means abstaining from food, drink, and other specific actions from dawn (fajr) to sunset (maghrib) with the intention to worship Allah.

Conditions for the Validity of Fasting

For fasting to be valid, the following conditions must be fulfilled:

1. Being Muslim: Fasting is only valid if performed by a believer.

2. Sound Mind: The individual must be mentally capable.

3. Free from Menstruation/Nifas: Women must not be in a state of menstruation or postnatal bleeding.

4. Avoiding Forbidden Days: Fasting is not valid on days when fasting is explicitly prohibited, such as the two Eids.

Conditions for Obligation of Fasting

1. Puberty (Baligh): Fasting becomes obligatory upon reaching puberty.

2. Being Muslim: Only Muslims are obligated to fast.

3. Sound Mind: Individuals must have mental capacity.

3. Disliked (Makruh):

   • Fasting every single day without a break.

   • Fasting only on Friday, Sunday, or Saturday.

4. Prohibited (Haram):

   • Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

   • Days of Tashreeq (11th–13th Dhul-Hijjah).

   • Without spousal consent (in specific cases).

Benefits of Fasting

1. Spiritual Benefits:

   • Strengthens faith and connection with Allah.

   • Purifies the soul and increases taqwa (piety).

2. Health Benefits:

   • Promotes discipline in eating habits.

   • Helps detoxify the body.

3. Mental Benefits:

   • Improves self-control and patience.

   • Reduces stress by focusing on worship and gratitude.

4. Social Benefits:

   • Encourages charity and helping others.

Recommended Acts During Fasting (Sunat)

1. Eat sahur and delay it until near fajr.

2. Break the fast early (at maghrib) with sweet foods like dates.

3. Pray tarawih during Ramadhan nights.

4. Avoid idle activities and bad behavior.

5. Read more Qur’an and give in charity.

Actions That Break Fasting (Haram)

1. Eating or drinking intentionally.

2. Deliberate vomiting.

3. Menstruation or postnatal bleeding.

4. Sexual intercourse during fasting hours.

Excuses for Missing Fasting

1. Travelers: Can delay fasting and make it up later.

2. Elderly: Those unable to fast must pay fidyah (charity).

3. Health Issues: Severe hunger or thirst that could harm the body.

Ramadhan Activities

1. Tarawih: Strengthening faith through night prayers.

2. Tadarus: Group recitation of the Qur’an.

3. Qiyam al-Layl: Praying at night, especially during the last 10 days.

4. Laylatul Qadr: Seeking the Night of Decree, better than 1,000 months.

Fasting is a gift that brings countless rewards, purifies the soul, and improves our relationship with Allah. By understanding its rules and virtues, we can make fasting a powerful act of worship in our lives.

Literal meaning: Growth, cleanliness, and betterment.

Technical meaning: A determined share of wealth prescribed by Allah to be distributed among specific deserving categories.

Is Zakat the Same as Tax?

No, zakat is not the same as tax. Zakat is an act of worship, commanded by Allah, with fixed rules on amount, recipients, and distribution. Tax, on the other hand, is a government-imposed financial obligation used for national development and public services.

Differences Between Zakat and Sadaqah (Charity Giving)

Zakat is compulsory, one of the pillars of Islam, and has strict rules regarding its recipients, amount, and time of payment. It is divided into two types: Zakat Fitrah and Zakat Mal. Meanwhile, Sadaqah is voluntary and can be given at any time, in any amount, to anyone, including non-Muslims. Sadaqah also includes Infaq, which is general charity, and Waqaf, which is a long-term endowment.

Virtues of Zakat

1. Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah)

Strengthens faith that Allah will replace what is given for His sake.

Helps overcome attachment to wealth.

2. Ukhuwah (Brotherhood & Unity)

Strengthens love and unity among Muslims.

Purifies the heart from envy and hatred by reducing financial disparity.

Conclusion
