Background of Mary MacKillop (1842 - 1909)

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne and she grew up in a poor family. Her mother and father were quite wealthy but when they started a family they became destitute of money. Even though her family was poor she got an alright education from the private school she went to and from her father that studied priesthood. To help her family with money she got a lot of jobs including a teaching job at the catholic denominational school. At this point all Mary wanted was to have any kind of religious life. To achieve this she followed Father Julian Tenison-Woods. He wanted to start a group called the sisters of the saint Joseph of the sacred heart. This group he wanted to found would have to live in poverty and teach poor children that couldn't afford education. Mary was the first person to join this group. The sisters of saint Joseph spread throughout Australia and found new members to join them but they ran into some problems. Mary was inspired to help people even from the beginning. At first, she was probably inspired her father who was a priest. This means she grew up with religion. The person who inspired her to help the poor was none other than Father Julian Tyson Woods. He was the one that started the Saint Joseph Sisters of the Sacred Heart and Mary was the first member.

Mary MacKillop was very dedicated to her religion. She spent her life teaching religion and basic skills to those who could not afford education. We don't know specifically what prayers she said or what spiritual practices she did but we do know that they were many prayers that were wrote for her after she died (see Prayer of Mary MacKillop).

Mary and Jesus are two of the same kind of people. They both tried to help others throughout their lifetime. They are both people that are prophets, kings and priests. A prophet is someone that spreads God's word and accepts people opinions. Mary did this by teaching poor kids religion. A king is someone that has supreme authority over a territory. A priest is a person who is the bridge between God and people. A priest is someone that has to make sacrifices. Mary and Jesus were all of these.

There have been many organisations that have set out to teach or help poor people. One in particular is caritas. Caritas without knowing it is following in her footsteps. They teach and provide for poor people that can't support themselves.
Caritas vision is to create
A just and fair world,
A world in balance,
At peace and free of poverty;
A world, which the Church in Australia helps build,
Where all human beings can live in dignity and Communities are architects of their own development.
I think this vision fits in perfectly with what Mary wanted to achieve.

Problem?
A man didn't know what to do to inherit eternal life.
What did Jesus do?
Jesus answered “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.Then come, follow me.” then he said “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
How did the people respond?
The disciples were amazed.

This parable could have inspired Mary MacKillop to help poor people. Jesus was a very important historical figure to christians. When she read that he said that then she could have been inspired.

This parable could inspire people even today! People must read this and think of others. This is a parable shows us that helping others as Mary did is the right path.

They lived around the same time. They both lived in times of social change. Rerum Novarum was a christian teaching at the time thanks to the pope. They both realised that the poor needed them. He wrote: 'The poor must be speedily and fittingly cared for, since the great majority of them live undeservedly in miserable and wretched conditions’. She wrote: ‘If the choice be given, seek first the most neglected places ... it is to those we should desire to go’. They were both very similar in many ways. They wanted to help the poor.

Mary was raised as a catholic. She was brought up on CST. It has had a big impact on her. She pursued a religious life from a young age. She learn't that helping people is the right path thanks to CST. The bible (especially the new testament) teaches us to love our neighbours. This is probably where Mary MacKillop got her inspiration to help people. The churches social teachings definitely impacted Mary.
