Her little boy was crying, clinging to her skirt, trying to hold her hand "It's nothing, Mother! There's nothing there...Please sit down... " He pained me even more than did his mother's cries.
Some of the women tried to calm her"(25)

This is foreshadowing something else later in the story. As we continue to read we find this out for sure. The woman may have been possessed or maybe God was trying to send another sign.

As Mrs. Schachter kept screaming and carrying on, sucking the air that was left in the cattle car, she had pushed the others to the edge. People weren't already in the right mental state but with her screaming it was not helping. When the young men forced her to sit down and then bound and gagged her, I had a new point of view from this paragraph on. I was not expecting the others to shut her up and take the other's thoughts and feelings into consideration also. Everyone was trying to keep their mental state stable and physically but if she would have kept having fits, this may have affected attitudes more than necessary. Although I don't feel like Mrs. Schachter was doing this to make others listen to the terror, it was best for all of the deportees to hear what she was saying to be aware and maybe get the message before getting out of the cattle cars at Auschwitz.

I wonder how many people in the cars were claustrophobic and freaking out because of the limited space more so than leaving their homes. He was not selfish nor were the rest of the people. Everyone was trying to help each other out giving warning and getting supplies ready. The fact that Elie did not hesitate to go make their friends aware shows what kind of character he is. The Jews mindset had to be positive, calm, and not selfish to get through these times. Most people were like Elie, willing to share the limited supplies they had and minimal food provided.

His mind at the time wanted food not thinking of the later consequences he would face when caught. For most prisoners, Fear was now greater than hunger. I was very shocked at the fact this man was shot in the face from trying to feed his starved self. Nobody even did anything, the man dropped to the ground with his face stained by the soup. As for the other prisoners made a shocking move in my opinion. They watched without making an effort to show they just wanted food. Cares were all on surviving without the pain that was unnecessary.

Inhumanity was just unbelievable the way they were beaten physically but mentally this was all just as bad. Imagine being told daily you're a feal-ridden dog!

On page 87 chapter 6, the story states My father's presence was the only thing that stopped me. He was running next to me, out of breath, out of strength, desperate. I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his sole support.
This paragraph struck me by surprise. I know they haven't given up this whole time and been strong, but this far, this much, and he is still willing to give it everything he's got in him left for his fathers sake. Most all of the prisoners had the will to keep striving through the harsh conditions day in and day out.

Page 94 chapter 7 I could not answer him. Someone had lain down on top of me, smothering me. I couldn't breathe through my mouth or my nose. Sweat was running down my forehead and my back. This was it; the end of the road. A silent death, suffocation. No way to scream, to call for help. I tried to rid myself of my invisible assassin. My whole desire to live became concentrated in my nails. I scratched,I fought for a breath of air. I tore at decaying flesh that did not respond.I could not free myself of that mass weighing down my chest. Who knows? Was I struggling with a dead man?
Elie stayed tough through all of the pain and torture Elie had been through, the blows, and walking through the snow with an injured foot even unhealed. This broke my heart reading this I could picture this. He used very good detail and imagery. These are painful and gutwrenching words to have to realize those are the real conditions he battled through. AND lived.

I had difficulty breathing."
Elie was trying to let Juliek breathe but there wasn't any way he could magically make it happen. He could hardly breathe himself suffering underneath bodies that may have been dead or unable to move also. I wonder how much longer the prisoners that were left would have made it if they didn't sneak a breathe of air every time possible.
