Goal #1

Learn to be intelligent about my emotions in the workplace. More clear, I should control my emotions and use love to lead the team. Based on the textbook, “When leaders inspire fear, they destroy the opportunity for feedback, blinding them to reality and denying them the chance to correct damaging decisions and behaviors.” (Daft, R. L., & Lane, P. G., 2005, p. 155). My first goal will focus on how to reduce fear and bring more love to work. According to the textbook, caring and compassion, listening, and connecting with others on a personal level are all good ways to improve a leader to bring love to the team. (p. 156)

Action Plan:

1. Stop keep telling others my ideas, and try to listen more to others’ opinions. I talked a lot when team sharing thoughts, and sometimes I will ignore others’ opinions to keep my opinion. I understand that I might disagree their thoughts, but that does not mean it is wrong. By improving that and make my team members feel the love from me, I’m still going to giving out my own opinion, but I will listen to others’ opinions first, and try to provide mine’s with keywords and main points.

2. Be more caring and compassion. According to the self-insight tests “What’s your thinking style” (p.118), my thinking style is more Quadrant A, which “Opinions and feelings are generally not considered as important as facts.” (p. 177). It might work in few situations, but my performance could be a lack in other situations. By improving that, I will communicate more with my team, getting familiar with my team members. Also, try to think by stand on their side and I believe it will be different with my own way of thinking.

Learn to handle conflicts better in different situations. According to the textbook, “Team leaders have to find the right balance between conflict and cooperation” since too little conflict can decrease team performance, and too much conflict “damage productivity, tear relationships apart, and interfere with the healthy exchange of ideas and information.” (para. 5, p. 310). In this goal, I will improve my way of dealing these kinds of conflicts.

Action Plan:

1. Be more confident in making my own decisions. According to the self-insight tests “How Do You Handle Conflicts?” (p. 313), I’m good at handling conflicts by accommodating style, which reflects a high degree of cooperativeness when dealing the conflicts. I should learn to be comfortable in other four styles so that I could handle the conflicts better during the work. For example, I’m not feeling good on dominating style. However, it is needed during an emergency situation. During a conflict, I should try to stand more for my own opinions, and believe that it matters to my team about my opinions. I will not give up my opinions right away when someone says it is not a good idea.

2. Try to make the best decision for the situation by not being nervous on team member’s disagreement. As mentioned above, I should try to make a fast decision during an emergency situation. However, it is likely that part of my team might disagree with my decision. I should be clear and confident about the result of the decision and willing to take the responsibility, so that I can be comfortable on facing the objection from the team and not feel nervous and fear.

The purpose of this storyboard is to demonstrate my understanding of the leadership knowledge covered in IHMN354, The Leadership Experience class, and how it makes me changed in the future leadership applying to the workplace. In this paper, I will provide two of my goals for future development, and then provide two action items for each goal about how I’m going to achieve them.

In a conclusion, try to listen more to others’ opinions, and be more caring and compassion to bring more love to my work and my team. And be more confidence in making my own decisions and be comfortable to make decisions by myself to handle conflicts better in different situations. I’ve learned a lot from this course. This storyboard might not include everything I’ve learned, but it is a great course which really teaches and changed me to become a great leader.
