The Alchemist tells Santiago that to immerse himself in the desert and understand the Soul of the World, he should always listen to his heart. Santiago takes the Alchemist's advice and tries to listen to his inner voice in the next few days of traveling. However, the heart does not always help Santiago achieve his personal legend. It warns Santiago of danger, causing him to want to retreat. When the two start seeing tribesmen passing around, Santiago's heart begins "to speak of fear," and frightens the boy with the possibility that he might not find his treasure or die in the desert (P133).

On the surface, Santiago's heart is trying to prevent him from finding the treasure, but it is actually instructing him the necessary lesson to reach his personal legend: "Courage is the quality most essential to understanding the Language of the World" (P115).
