Ableism: The oppression of peoples with disabilities.

Privilege: means to be lucky, to have fortunate opportunity
and to benefit from this luck and opportunity.

1. The invisibility of privilege for the dominant group.
-Because those in dominant groups are not disadvantaged by the oppression, but
in fact benefit from it, they find it fairly easy to dismiss the accounts of members of
minoritized groups (110).
- Kristian's hall hosted a fundraiser for Easter Seals, a non profit dedicated to helping children with physical disabilities succeed. The organizer of the event had the audience understand the invisibility of their abled bodies to go to summer camp by listing common camp activities and crossing them against accessible activities for those with physical disabilities.

2. The lack of humility that results from your limited view of others.
-The dominant group, while the least likely to understand oppression and the most likely to be invested in holding it in place, is the group in the position to write the rules. Thus the rules will continue to benefit them (117).
- This stems from the prejudices of the individual or a group. An example of this may be the way in which people view the lives of the rich or famous, stemming from the common lack of empathy that follows those of visible privilege.

3. Common Dominant Group Misconceptions About Privilege.
-From the reading “If we haven’t personally discriminated, we are not benefitting.”
-One group member was in a wheelchair for a few weeks at school and the portable did not have a wheelchair ramp, so anytime the class left the classroom (I.e. to go to gym or the library, etc.) they had to call an additional staff member to assist them down the stairs. Even though no specific person said anything to discriminate, their privilege was still evident as they did not need assistance to go down the stairs.

What is privilege?

From the social justice perspective, our group discussed that “Privilege is socially constructed to benefit members of the dominant group (pg.104)”. It is arbitrary and often times unjustified.

Ableism is the discrimination of the people with disabilities or people perceived as disabled.

Internal and Attitudinal Dimensions of Privilege

The dimensions of privilege covers how structured and built in privileges are in society. For example: the society favors right-handed people, which is considered to be the dominant group. Therefore the society is designed to fit the needs of the dominant group more. This privilege applies the same for gender between male and female, and able bodied people.

Common Dominant Group Misconceptions About Privilege

-Refers to the minoritized group as underprivileged or disadvantaged

-Its rarely talked about the dominant group as over privileged or over advantaged
