They tried to gain more by closing off all highways, canals, and railroads from western-occupied Germany to western-occupied Berlin, making it impossible to get food or other supllies to the city. The Soviet Union believed this would drive out the US, Britain, and France, but they supplied the city from the air.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>During the Cold War the US and Soviet Union were in a race to space. They competed to make progress before the other. On October 4th, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the very first artificial satellite, Sputnik I. This intensified the arms race and cold war tensions between the US and Soviet Union. On April 12th, 1961, the Soviet Union launched the first man into space, Yuri Gagarin. The space race unofficially ended when a US astronaut, Neil Armstrong, took the first steps on the moon.</div>]]></description>
