Fictional Character: Itachi Uchiha

Itachi Uchiha killed his entire clan when he was only 13 years old. He was a very skilled shinobi (ninja) that did everything by himself including unlock his Mangekyo sharingan (a visual prowess that allowed him to have more powers) after he watched his best friend, Shisui, commit suicide in order to ensure his eyes wouldn't be stolen and used by the corrupt government official (Danzo). Later in the show, it was revealed that Itachi slaughtered his clan because they were planning to commit a coup against the government and he made a deal with Danzo that if he killed his entire clan, his little brother, Sasuke, would be spared. When he was 4 years old, Itachi had seen so much war and death, that he tried to kill himself by jumping off a cliff. When Emerson said "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide" his words can be related to Itachi because he did not attempt suicide because he wanted to die, instead he did it to understand the meaning or value to life after seeing the taboo topic so ample in his surroundings during the war.

Song: The Distance by Cake

The Distance by Cake is a song about a race that takes place and how one man takes it into his own hands to ensure that he gets better and becomes able to beat anyone who stands in his way. The quote "Whoso would be man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but you must explore if it be goodness." connects to the lyrics "As they speed through the finish, the flags go down The fans get up and they get out of town The arena is empty except for one man Still driving and striving as fast as he can The sun has gone down and the moon has come up And long ago somebody left with the cup But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns And thinking of someone for whom he still burns" because in both instances, the men talked about are not conforming to the regular or usual way of doing things, but instead going further and doing more to ensure success. The small part "but must explored if it be goodness" connects the most to the song lyrics because instead of being content with what you have, it suggests that you must go beyond and question the very roots of the goodness, just like how the man in the song goes beyond and perfects his craft, not caring about the time, conditions, or absence of people.

Beethoven embodies this quote very well. His vision for music was not appreciated at all during his time, and many people did not like him because he was growing deaf and very tempermental. Aside from all the misunderstanding people, Beethoven continued to do what he loved to do, and after his time, he is known as one of the greatest musical geniuses of his time.

There are many ways that Chris McCandless embodies the principles stated. McCandless chooses to live away from civilization and society in the unknown wilderness. Chris makes sure that his way of life would not be understood by many. However, this works in his favor because it allows him to be at peace with himself and his lifestyle. Just like how Emerson is described, Chris McCandless is absorbed in nature and always tries to find meaning and beauty in nature, often adopting the ideas of transcendentalism.
