He says that a single note, in music, provides "authenticity." At first, I didn't understand the point he was trying to make, but reading on further helped me piece it together. I mean, how can one musical note ever even be called "music"?
Ratliff explains that "nobody else has played the single note exactly the same way." When I thought about this more, I thought of some of my favorite songs that included short, yet meaningful one-note somewhere in the song. I imagined what the song would be like without that excerpt, and I concluded that it's inclusion did, in fact, add something unique to the music. 
So if we want to really define a single note in music, it would be:
A monotone sound that can be played an infinite number of different ways and usually adds some sort of meaning to a musical composition.

On page 75, Ratliff writes, "A stubborn note takes the spell off of you." He means that it brings you back to the song instead of just absentmindedly listening. I don't agree with this statement. Any time I hear a part of a song with monotones, it puts me in a lull. I get bored very easily as I was blessed (ha) with a short-attention span when it comes to music. 
(This is one of the reasons this class can be difficult at times, as I have to subject myself to listening to songs I wouldn't necessarily ever listen to on my own time. However, through this class and Ratliff's book, I am learning to accept more and more types of music.)
Except for this excerpt, the author and I's opinions are pretty much on par with one another.
