  • The ESERA conference is held every 2 years
  • The next conference will be next year (2023) in Cappadocia, Turkey (August 29 to September 2, 2023)
  • ESERA ECR networking reception at the ESERA conference 
  • Support for booking queer-friendly hotels (see here for an initial guide)
  • The deadline to apply to present at the conference (posters, presentation, symposium) is likely to open late 2022 (with a deadline of the end of January 2023)
  • You can attend without presenting but if you get the chance to present it's always a useful experience
  • Sign-up for conference attendance will be in the spring
  • The board is still deciding on what format the conference will take (e.g. 100% in person/hybrid)
  • ESERA members will get email updates about this, and you can follow ESERA on twitter: @ESERA_org
  • ESERA conference scholarships especially for those coming from developing countries - registration/travel/accommodation (€10,000 available in total)
  • For the last conference there was also an 'emergency fund scheme' and provided extra support for conference attendance (€10,000 in total, half of this amount was provided to ECR)

  • Every year, ESERA hosts a week-long summer school for science education PhD students
  • Students at the summer school get to present their research (often for the first time), get supportive and friendly feedback from other students and from experienced science education researchers
  • During the week there’s also a poster session, lectures, workshops and social events
  • I really recommend!
  • This year’s is in Utrecht in The Netherlands from August 29 to September 3 (congrats if you're attending!)
  • To apply for future years you write a synopsis of your PhD project, no more than 1,800 words. Deadline is end of January each year, and you hear in the spring if you have been accepted
  • Students should not be too near to the beginning or end of their PhD study to be able to benefit from the experience and mentorship
  • The student participation fee is € 400
  • Every other year there are 2 scholarships (2000 USD each) for two NARST PhD student members to attend the ESERA summer school (blog from past recipients here)

  • Every year ESERA offers travel awards of up to €1,000 to ESERA students, or those who have completed their PhDs in the last 2 years
  • The awards are intended to enable early career ESERA members to visit science education researchers with expertise relevant to their project in other countries (not intended to support attendance at conferences, summer schools)
  • At least one of the two countries involved in any proposal must be within Europe
  • The awards can be used to pay for travel, accommodation and subsistence
  • To apply you write an Expression of Interest (1 or 2 pages) which outlines who you are, your planned destination, the purpose of your journey and an estimated budget (template available online)
  • Deadlines are each December for travel that must take place the following year

  • ESERA also collates a bank of European science education abstracts of doctoral theses
  • If you have completed your doctorate (or know someone that has), an abstract can be added to the ESERA website
  • To do this, you submit an abstract of your own dissertation
  • ESERA also publish abstracts from non-European countries if a thesis has been supervised or written by an ESERA member
