"I don't want to be the next Michael Jordan. I only want to be Kobe Bryant" (espn.com 1997).

This quote speaks to me because I want to be me and I can only be me. I do not wish to live in the shadow of someone else or be known as a runner-up. I only want first place and I want to do it on my own.

I believe this quote speaks to JFK because it showed the pride he had in being American and he was proud to be a descendent of fighters and revolutionaries. He wanted peace in the world and believed that he had the power to do so and he also encouraged others to do the same. JFK was an inspiration to many through his words and actions about thinking rationally and peacefully.

"When I went to the big houses, I remembered that I was, at best, a visitor to the world I saw there" (Rodriguez 382).

This quote speaks to Richard Rodriguez because on the inside he knew that he wasn't fully welcome or that he belonged in the luxurious life. He was often seen as a lesser human being because of his skin and it stuck with him for the rest of his life. Richard has used these lessons to accept himself more and realize that he does not have to be rich to be accepted into society.

"It felt like worms and toads and slimy things were crawling out of my chest, but it also felt good, as if this awful side of me had surfaced, at last" (Tan 394).

This quote relates to Amy Tan in that she had a lot of frustration growing up because of these expectations placed on her. All she wanted was to be her own person on her own terms and to live the life that she made for herself.

"When I was done, I read over my words, and my eyes filled. I finally sounded like myself in English!" (Alvarez 402).

This quote pertains to Julia Alvarez's self identity by her realizing that she has a place in society just like everyone else and now she feels more confident. This moment cemented her confidence in feeling as comfortable writing in English as she did in Spanish. It provided an insight into her authentic self.

Suzan Shown Harjo’s “Last Rites for Indian Dead”

"What if museums, universities, and government agencies could put your dead relatives on display or keep them in boxes to be cut up and otherwise studied? The ordinary American would say there ought to be a law--and there is, for ordinary Americans. The problem for American Indians is that there are too many laws of the kind that make us the archeological property of the United States and too few of the kind that protect us from such insults" (Harjo 407).

This passage relates to Suzan Shown Harjo by showing how she gives an argument while informing the reader and that is a large part of her identity. She fights to preserve her culture and her ancestors' legacy by spreading information that is ordinarily unknown by the general public. She fights for her people's rights and cultural preservation.

“Discrimination no matter how small is wrong. Support of discrimination no matter who does it is wrong” (Kent 2019).

This quote relates to me allowing me to reflect on how I treat others. A substantial amount of my identity is about treating others with respect and making them feel welcome around me. I have had to deal with being discriminated against and I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy.

“If a man looks at the world when he is 50 the same way he looked at it when he was 20 and it hasn’t changed, then he has wasted 30 years of his life" (Ali 1974).

I relate to this quote the most for the reason that I believe a person should grow throughout their lives. Keeping the same mindset for years will make you lose out on many joys life has to offer. I try to grow as much as I can from any lessons that I learn.
