For many years the British and French impressed US ships. They kidnapped them and made them work on their ships and make them fight against their side. The British had seized more than 1000 ships. This made Americans very mad.

USS Chesapeake Incident

A British warship"Leopard" stopped a US ship. They wanted to search the ship but the captain refused too. Then they killed 21 US sailors and started another case of war fever. This started to form an unhappy enviroment for the Americans.

Embargo Act of 1807

President Jefferson convinced the congress to declare an embargo, but it hurt the US. In 1809 the congress ended the embargo with all countries except Britain and France.

War Hawks (1811)

The War Hawks were a group of Republican Congressmen and they wanted a war against Britain. John C Calhoun was the senator of SC and Henry Clary was the senator for Kentucky.

Election of 1808

James Madison a democratic-republican was elected president in 1808 and and 4 years later 1812 he decided to go to war against Britain.

War in Canada (1812-1814)

The Americans were very unprepared for the war against Canada. The British captured Detroit before the Americans could capture Canada. Many Native Americans joined Canada's side because they wanted to stop the Americans from taking more land.

The War on Land: Battle for Washington

In 1814 the British invaded the state capitol Washington D.C and burnt the Capitol, White House and many other public buildings. Thanks to Dolley Madison, she saved a famous George Washington picture.

Battle at Fort McHenry

Francis Scott Key who was a American lawyer and prisoner of the British, saw an American flag flying over Fort McHenry after the battle. This inspired him to write the "Star-Spangled Banner".

Treaty of Ghent , Results of the War

In 1815 the Americans and the British met up to sign a peace treaty. Due to the treaty the British and Americans became better allies. The US gained more respect from others but caused further damage with the Native Americans.

The Battle of New Orleans (January 8th, 1815)

This was the most important battle. The Americans won and were lead by general Andrew Jackson. The Battle was continued after the War was over because the treaty did not reach the Americans for several weeks.
