"When the World Was Ours" by Liz Kessler is a fantastic historical fiction novel based off of true events in Liz Kessler's family life. This novel takes on the perspectives of three children during World War II. Leo and Else and Jewish children who share their thoughts and feelings about Nazi's while Max is the son of a Nazi. Elsa's family moves to Czechoslovakia to find a safe haven, Leo's father gets into an altercation in the town square and ends up in prison and Max's father becomes a senior SS officer and must move to Munich while he works at Dachau. Elsa ends up in a concentration camp and Max becomes a member of the "Hitler Youth".

The rational behind selecting "When the World Was Ours" is because it shows three very different perspectives on the affects of World War II. We have Elsa's family who takes on the perspective of experiencing the worst of the concentration camps. Leo's family were able to find a sponsor in order to escape to England. Max's family shows the perspective of being a part of the Nazi clan. This will help educate students of the reality of World War II.

The website offers many primary sources, biographies, etc. A great feature about this website is that there are fully virtual exhibits that are rich in detail and are in chronological order.

For this activity, students will work in groups and each be assigned a different exhibit that they will study and later present to the class so that everyone will gain an understanding of multiple exhibits.

I really like the core aspect is having multiple perspectives, especially on a controversial issue. In this day and age of social media and propaganda, students should learn to get in into the habit of understand and analyzing people’s stories to make their own informed opinion.

I think one of the characters being the son of a Nazi makes for compelling tension, so it does make me want to read how he’s portrayed and what becomes of the two.

Great work to you both! 🤗

- Aubrie

I love the use of multimedia as a pre-activity task. I think that this exposure will help students expand their knowledge of possible resources to review from but also they are learning through a larger scope. I also think that this does aid in differentiating of learning because there are some students who do prefer a specific learning style.
